INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Hawai'i Pacific University continues to hold the top spot in the West Region as the second NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Regional Rankings were announced today by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee.
The PacWest Champion Sharks (26-1, 21-0) had a 25-1 record against Division II teams and a 24-1 mark against teams within the West Region (and border states to the region) at the start of the week when the ranking record began. The Sharks 88-54 win at Chaminade on Tuesday was not reflected in this week's rankings.
Alaska Anchorage (25-2, 21-1) moved up to second over UC San Diego (22-4 DII, 21-4 West Region) who dropped to third this week. The rest of the top 10 remained the same with Cal State San Marcos (22-4, 21-4) fourth, Northwest Nazarene (18-6, 18-6) fifth, and Azusa Pacific (22-4, 21-4) sixth, Western Washington (16-8, 16-8) seventh and Cal Poly Pomona (17-9, 16-9) eighth. Simon Fraser (17-11, 17-10) is ninth and Concordia Irvine (16-9, 16-9) is 10th.
The NCAA Division II Regional Rankings are used to select and seed the eight-team NCAA Division II West Regional. The PacWest Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association all have automatic berths to the tournament for their conference tournament champions. The other five berths to the NCAAs are selected at large via the regional rankings. The last rankings will be issued next Wednesday before the NCAA Division II Tournament bracket is revealed on Sunday, March 8.
The Sharks close the regular season this week, when they host Hawai'i Hilo for Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
