INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Hawai'i Pacific University continues to hold the top spot in the West Region in the last NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Regional Rankings announced today by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee.
The PacWest Champion Sharks (27-1, 22-0) have a 27-1 record against Division II teams and a 26-1 mark against teams within the West Region (and border states to the region) at the end of the regular season.
Alaska Anchorage (27-2 DII, 23-1 West Region) stayed at number two, while Cal State San Marcos (23-4, 22-4) jumped to number three over fellow CCAA member UC San Diego (22-5, 21-5) who fell to number four. Northwest Nazarene (20-6, 20-6) is fifth, with Azusa Pacific (24-4, 23-4) sixth, Western Washington (18-8, 18-8) seventh and Cal Poly Pomona (19-9, 18-9) eight. Simon Fraser (18-12, 18-11) is ninth and Central Washington (18-10, 18-10) is 10th.
The NCAA Division II Regional Rankings are used to select and seed the eight-team NCAA Division II West Regional. The PacWest Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association all have automatic berths to the tournament for their conference tournament champions. The other five berths to the NCAAs are selected at large via the regional rankings. The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket is revealed on Sunday at 4 p.m. HST (10 p.m. EST) via a webstream on NCAA.com. The top-seed of the region is usually the host of the regional tournament.
The PacWest Champion Sharks now look to secure their third consecutive PacWest Conference Tournament Championship. As the No. 1 seed, HPU receives a bye to the semifinals of the tournament at Azusa Pacific's Felix Event Center on Friday, where they face the winner of Thursday's first round game between fourth-seed Point Loma and fifth-seed Biola. Tipoff of the semifinal is slated for 12:30 p.m. HST (2:30 p.m. PST). The semifinal winners play in the title game on Saturday at Noon HST (2 p.m. PST).
