HPU also honors the 1991 NAIA National Champion Softball Team of Hawai'i Loa College. HLC merged with HPU a year after winning the national title and the programs merged as well under the tutelage of HPU Hall of Fame coach Howard Okita. With only 12 players, the 1991 team won its way to the NAIA Championships in Columbia, Mo., where they defeated Puget Sound (Wash.) 5-1 for the national championship. Their pioneering play not only led to that national title, but after merging with HPU formed one of the most formidable collegiate softball programs in the country.
