Honolulu, HI (January 11, 2014) – Several Sea Warrior men's tennis players are competing as individuals in the Royal Lahaina Challenger Wild Card and all seven Hawai'i Pacific players advanced in the Round of 32 on Friday.
The winner of the tournament will receive a wild card into the main draw of the USTA Royal Lahaina Challenger played at the Royal Lahaina Resort on Maui from January 19 - 26, 2014.
Top seeded
Petr Michnev quickly dispatched former HPU Head Coach Henry Somerville in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Yann Renault was also victorious in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. That win sets up Sea Warrior v. Sea Warrior as Renault will face Michnev in the Sweet 16.
Last year's freshmen sensation,
Jaume Martinez-Vich had the toughest match of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UH-Manoa's David Schuster.
Newcomer
Thibaud Berland impressed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over former BYU-Hawaii player Eddie Merc.
Clemens Graute started the season right with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UH-Manoa's Marcel Chan.
Mattis Wetzel, also a newcomer to the HPU lineup, moved on with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Adriano Locorotondo advanced through a default, he will face former BYU-Hawaii #1 player Rong Ma in the Round of 16.
