WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University early and often in a 12-0 shutout of University of the Sciences of Philadelphia Sunday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (8-2) wrapped up the five-game series with the Devils (1-4) and closed a 10-game opening homestand.
"We got the bats alive and hit well as a team," said HPU head coach
Garett Yukumoto. "Our pitching from start to finish was super. It was a great way to wrap up the series."
Freshman righthander
Blake Flint of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (2-0) picked up his second win in his second collegiate game, going five innings, allowing just four hits with six strikeouts. Freshman lefty
Russell Grant of Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside worked one inning with no hits and two strikeouts. Sophomore righthander
Tyler Van Stone came in to start the seventh and worked three innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts and three walks to get his second save of the season.
Junior catcher
Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza and junior designated hitter Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure both went 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Woods scored twice and added an RBI, while Santana scored once. Junior shortstop
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Sharks got to Devil's starter Mack Gill in the second inning and blew open the game with a six-run inning. Santana opened the inning with a double to the gap in right center and Woods followed with a triple to center to score the first run.
Matthew Tsutomi drew a walk and stole second, and Jason Mopas smacked a 2 RBI single through the left side.
Froy Smith followed that with a triple to the right centerfield gap and HPU had a 4-0 lead. A strikeout was next, then
Tanner Tokunaga lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Smith and empty the bases with two out. HPU added a sixth run in the frame on an RBI single by Santana to score
Austin Inabata who had walked and stolen second.
A seventh run was added in the third inning when Tsutomi walked then went to third on a two-base wild pitch.
Keola Himann flied out to right to bring home Tsutomi.
HPU added two more on a bases loaded sacrifice fly from
Mitchell Bumann and an RBI single by
Trey Yukumoto.
A final run was plated in the eighth on an RBI single from Torres-Torioka.
The Sharks pitching was strong as Flint got out of a jam in the first, as T.J. Dezzi snuck a hot shot over the bag at first for a leadoff triple. However he was stranded Flint got the next batter to pop up on the infield and struckout the next two.
The other tight spot for the Sharks came in the Devil seventh after Van Stone went walk, strikeout, walk, strikeout, walk to load the bases with two out. He then proceeded to strikeout pinch hitter Derek DeMaria for the final out of the inning. USciences went 1-2-3 in their final two innings.
After 10 games at home to open the season, HPU is off until Saturday when it opens PacWest Conference play on the Big Island with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Hawai'i-Hilo. It's the start of a 12-game road swing for the Sharks who won't be back at Hans L'Orange Park until March 16.
