Holy Names trips up Sharks 6-5

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University made a late comeback attempt, but Holy Names held on for a 6-5 PacWest Conference win Sunday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (13-15, 3-14) closed the gap in the eighth inning and had a runner on in the ninth, but the Hawks (6-22, 3-12) held on to take the third game of the series.

"We seem to be snake bit right now," said HPU head coach Garett Yukumoto. "We're giving up the key hit and not getting it ourselves."

HPU managed to get only one unearned run off of the Hawks, despite HNU suffering four errors. The Sharks made two errors, but didn't allow an unearned run.

Junior shortstop Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon, and sophomore leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis, belted home runs in the fourth inning as they went 1-for-4, while junior third baseman Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena also 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Senior rightfielder Austin Inabata of Kapolei, Hawai'i/Moanalua tripled, but stopped on the base path rounding third before HNU shortstop Alex Denobriga dropped the throw that allowed Inabata to scamper home in the eighth.

Freshman righthander Blake Flint of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (3-4) got the loss after allowing five runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings while striking out four Hawks.  Junior righty Ryan Sanchez of Atwater, Calif./Atwater gave up one run on just two hits in going 4.2 innings with six strikeouts.

HNU's Aiden McIntyre (2-4) picked up the win going seven innings allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jimmy Doyle chalked up his first save allowing only one hit, Inabata's triple and his unearned run, to go with two strikeouts.

Holy Names scored one run in the first inning on Paul Kennedy's RBI single and threatened more after loading the bases, but Kennedy was called out for interfering with Torioka as the Shark was fielding the ball to end the inning.

HPU took the lead in the third inning when Inabata walked to open the inning and was driven home on Torioka's triple. Torioka scored on catcher Kreston Woods sacrifice fly to right for a 2-1 advantage.

The Hawks answered in the top of the fourth when designated hitter Drew Gwerder snaked an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-2 lead.

Then the Sharks pulled out the long ball in the bottom of the fourth. First it was Mopas who sent a 2-1 offering from McIntyre over the fence in left field for his first homer of the year to tie the game. Then after an out, Bumann smacked the first pitch thrown to the same spot for his second roundtripper of the year and a 4-3 HPU lead.

However, that lead was short lived. Holy Names tied the game after Kennedy doubled and Brad Bussard followed with an RBI single. Sanchez replaced Flint, but threw the ball away in trying to pickoff Bussard who advanced to third. A walk to Nick Snyder set up Branson Umbarger who tripled to right center for two RBI.

Sanchez settled down and set down the Hawks the rest of the game.

The Sharks pulled within a run on Inabata's drive to right center with two out in the eighth. Inabata drove the ball to the fence in the right center gap and easily scampered to third. Inabata was putting on the brakes rounding third when Denobriga dropped the throw from the outfield, and the Shark rightfielder kicked it back into gear to bring HPU within 6-5.

HPU threatened in the ninth, getting the tying run aboard, but could left the him stranded.

The Sharks and Hawks close their four-game series on Monday night at Hans L'Orange Park with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
