KANEOHE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University traded shutouts with Concordia (Calif.) during a PacWest Conference doubleheader at
Howard Okita Field on Thursday.
The Sharks (9-7, 4-4) got an RBI triple by
Sienna Santiago in the fourth inning of the second game to help HPU to the split of the twinbill. The Eagles (15-9-2, 5-4) won game one 3-0 behind a one-hitter thrown by Concordia's Grayson Harvey.
Santiago, a junior from Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea, was the offensive star of the afternoon for the Sharks, going 2-for-2 in the second game with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman righthander
Emiliee Leonard of LaMirada, Calif. (4-1), got back on the winning track, picking up her fourth victory of the season shutting out CUI on six hits with three strikeouts in game two.
The Sharks are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday at noon in a non-conference doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace at
Howard Okita Field.
Game One
HPU ran into a buzz saw in Concordia pitcher Grayson Harvey. Harvey gave up a single to Shark
Sierra Dias, HPU's second batter in the first inning. She then didn't allow another Shark a hit the of the way. Harvey struckout three HPU batters and did not issue a walk, but had one other Shark baserunner on a CUI error in the seventh.
Game Two
Leonard worked out of a jam in the first inning, then settled down to toss her second shutout and notch her fourth complete game.
The Sharks scratched out two runs in the fourth inning and made them hold up to pick up the win.
HPU opened the fourth with a single by
Dominique Walker and was brought home on Santiago's one-out RBI triple to take the lead. Santiago added the insurance run when she came home on an error fielding error at third when
Kristy Washizaki's shot was mishandled.
Leonard allowed two more runners after that, but the Eagles had no real threat as the Sharks got back on the winning track after three straight losses.
