HPU falls at Concordia (Calif.) 8-3

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Hawai'i Pacific University baseball team fell behind early and could never catch up as they fell to Concordia (Calif.) 8-3 in PacWest Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Eagles Field.
 
The Sharks (14-19, 4-17) have dropped 11 straight games on the mainland, while the Eagles (16-15, 13-6) picked up their fifth straight win.
 
HPU was paced offensively by junior designated hitter Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS and sophomore leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis who were both 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Junior catcher Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza went 2-for-4.
 
Freshman righthander Blake Flint of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle fell to 3-5 on the season after allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
 
The Sharks fell behind early, allowing runs in both the first and second innings on and RBI singles by Bailey Collins and a sacrifice fly by Tony Garcia.
 
The Eagles scored two more in the fifth inning when Haloa Dudoit smashed a 2-RBI single into centerfield for a 4-0 lead.
 
HPU made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning. Santana led off the inning with a solo home run to right. Wyatt Hoppie doubled to right and after a strikeout, Mopas tripled to right center to drive in Hoppie. Froy Smith grounded out to short for an RBI that scored Mopas and pulled the Sharks within one at 4-3.
 
CUI though put it away in the bottom of the eighth. Collins hit the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right field. Chris Martin added a two RBI single later in the inning and he came home on an RBI single by Ryan Land.
 
The Sharks and Eagles have one more game in the series on Monday at noon HST (3 p.m. PDT) at Eagles Field.
