AZUSA, Calif. -- Hawai'i Pacific University took three national championships on Saturday in the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association's 2017 Individual Event Finals at Azusa Pacific's Felix Event Center.

The Sharks took national titles in Five-Element Acro, Pyramid Flip and Pyramid Release. HPU placed second in Seven-Element Acro, Pyramid Twist, third in Six-Element Acro and fourth in Tumbling Open.

The NCATA also announced the 2017 All-Americans and Special Awards. Junior
Daisha Paulino was named to the 12-member All-America team and Sharks freshman
Makayla Garland was named the NCATA Newcomer of the Year.

Nicole Saiki and
Trina Salas, with sophomores
Harley Didriksen and
Ivee Kaye received a 9.90 in Five-Element Acro for the win, bettering Alderson-Broaddus in second with a 9.70 and Baylor at 9.60

In the Pyramid Flip, seniors Salas, Sam Smith, Erin Robbins, and
Lexi Vincent, along with junior
Ashley Thomas and sophomores
Kianna Roosevelt,
Haley Turner and
Chloe Murphy recorded a 9.90 to edge Baylor's team that placed second with a 9.85.

The Sharks took the Pyramid Release as Robbins, Smith, Saiki, Thomas, Didriksen, Turner and freshman
Hannah Riker tallied a 9.80 to beat Quinnipiac with a 9.75.

Baylor edged the Sharks in the Pyramid Twist, as HPU's team of Paulina, Saiki, Roosevelt, Turner, Riker, Murphy, Thomas, Smith and Vincent scored a 9.75 with the Bears posting a 9.80.

The Bears also got in front of the Sharks in the Seven-Element Acro. BU chalked up a 9.75, as the HPU squad of Paulino, Turner and Robbins scored a 9.65 to tie with Alderson-Broaddus for second.

In the Six-Element Acro event, Fairmont State won with a 9.85, Baylor was second at 9.80 and HPU's team of Garland, Roosevelt, Murphy and Vincent was third with a 9.75.

In the Tumbling Open, Garland placed fourth, with a run of 9.600, finishing behind Oregon's Krista Phillips who won the championship with a 9.900.

The Sharks three event championships were third to Baylor's five event wins and Oregon's four. Quinnipiac took two event titles and Fairmont State one.
