AZUSA, Calif. -- The Hawai'i Pacific University baseball team dropped a PacWest doubleheader to ninth ranked Azusa Pacific 9-5 and 5-0 on Friday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
Â
The Sharks (14-23, 4-21) dropped their 15th straight game on the mainland. The PacWest leading Cougars (29-4, 16-3) won their fourth straight and 14 of their last 15 games.
Â
The Sharks took an early lead in the first game and were tied with the Cougars at 5-5 after six-and-a half innings. But Azusa Pacific plated four runs in the seventh to beat HPU.
Â
The Sharks gave up five runs in the first three innings of the second game to the Cougars and APU allowed the Sharks just three hits in winning 5-0.
Â
Junior
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena led the offensive attack for the Sharks. He was 4-for-7 on the afternoon with a double and a run scored. Torioka was 3-for-4 in the first game.
Â
The Sharks play their final road game of the season when the teams wrap up the four-game series with a single contest starting at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
Â
Game One
Â
A four unearned runs bottom of the seventh inning spelled disaster for the Sharks as APU claimed the first game 9-5.
Â
The Sharks jumped out in front with single runs in the first and third innings. After loading the bases in the first, HPU's
Jordan Mopas was hit by a pitch to score
Codi Santana. In the third Santana doubled in Torres-Torioka to give the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Then it was the Cougars' turn, tying the game in the fourth on Sean Aspinall RBI single and sacrifice fly by Quincy Quintero.
Â
Azusa took the lead with a three-run fifth on Pablo O'Connor's RBI single, a wild pitch that scored O'Connor and a sacrifice fly from Michael Staudinger.
Â
But the Sharks plated three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the No. 9 Cougars. After a single by Mopas and
Mitchell Bumann being hit by a pitch,
Keola Himan got a one-out 2-RBI single. After a single from Torres-Torioka, Santana drove an RBI single through the right side to score Himan to make it 5-5.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, O'Connor doubled between outs. The Sharks intentionally walked Adrian Tovalin to put two on. But instead of a force out, Staudinger reached on an error at short that allowed O'Connor to score. Aspinall singled to load the bases in front of Quintero who doubled to right to plate three runs and post the 9-5 lead.
Â
Reliever Billy Clemens (1-4) was hung with the loss for the Sharks after allowing three hits and the four unearned runs.
Â
Game Two
Â
Azusa Pacific's Dillon Miyashiro shut down the Sharks, scattering three hits and striking out three in leading the Cougars to a 5-0 win in the seven-inning contest.
Â
HPU never got a baserunner past second, and that was on Torres-Torioka's double in the first inning.
Â
APU collected a first inning run on O'Connor's RBI single following a single and balk.
Â
In the third, the Cougars loaded the bases on a double and two errors. Tovalin followed by clearing the bases with a grand slam homer to give APU the 5-0 lead.
Â
APU loaded the bases again in the sixth, but
Ryan Sanchez got the Cougars to hit into a double play and added a ground out.
Â
HPU starter
Kyle Detwiler (1-4) picked up the loss for the Sharks, allowing nine hits and all five runs (three earned) with two strike outs. Sanchez need only five pitches to get a full inning pitched.
Â
Miyashiro went to 5-0 on the season for APU.
