HPU sweeps final doubleheader from BYU-Hawaii

LAIE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University swept a doubleheader in its final contests at BYU-Hawaii 9-6 and 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the BYU-Hawaii Softball Field.

The Sharks (27-19, 16-14) and Seasiders (12-29, 9-20) will not play again as BYUH closes its athletic program at the end of the semester.

HPU scored twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh for the win in game one, then junior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning blasted her ninth home run of the season as HPU never trailed in game two.

Junior Sienna Santiago of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea and senior Nicole Viena of Corona, Calif./Santiago both went 5-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored in the twin bill.

Freshman Emiliee Leonard (9-7) of LaMirada, Calif./St. Paul went the distance in the circle in winning game one with four strikeouts.

Sophomore Jordan Curry (6-7) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington, won the second game allowing just three hits and striking out three.

The Sharks close the season on Saturday when they host Hawai'i-Hilo at Howard Okita Field.

Game One

The Sharks overcame a 4-3 deficit with six runs in the last two innings as they grabbed the opener 9-6.

HPU opened by scoring three unearned runs in the top of the second. The Sharks got a one RBI single from Kiana Wolfe and a two RBI single from Sierra Dias after two out with an error in the inning for the 3-0 lead.

But the Seasiders answered with four runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Alanna Anderson, a throwing error by HPU catcher Toyama, a sacrifice fly from Makaela Williamson and a passed ball by HPU reserve catcher Gabriella Fordiani for a 4-3 BYUH lead.

The game stayed that way until the top of the sixth. Mari Kajiwara reached on a bunt single, went to second on an error and scored on Santiago's RBI singled. Santiago stole second and third and scored on a second throwing error by BYUH catcher Williamson to give the Sharks a 5-4 lead.

In the seventh, Kristy Washizaki drew a pinch hit walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. She then stole third before Viena smacked an RBI single down the left field line. Viena stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Williamson. Fordiani sent an RBI single through the left side for a second run and Wolfe plated two more with a two-RBI double to right.

The Seasiders added two in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch and an error, but the Sharks shut down the rally for the 9-6 win.

Game Two

The Sharks never trailed in winning the second game 5-1.

HPU got on the board with one run in the second as Fordiani doubled to right center and Dias singled her home for a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, the Sharks all but put it away as Santiago singled and Boyer belted her ninth home run of the year on a first pitch drive to right center.

The Seasiders scored their only run in the third when Anderson walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. But she was the only baserunner in the inning to cut the Sharks lead to 3-1.

HPU put up two insurance in the top of the seventh as Dias tripled down the right field line to open the inning and scored on Leonard's pinch hit double down the left field line. Kayla Sanchez followed with a single to right that drove in Kajiwara who reentered for Leonard.

BYUH got a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it as the Sharks quickly ended the inning.
