WAIPAHU, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University swept a PacWest Conference doubleheader from Hawai'i-Hilo in both team's final conference games of the year at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (19-28-1, 9-26-1) downed the Vulcans (8-30, 8-28) 5-3 in the first game and 12-1 in the nightcap.
Junior first baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, carried the big stick in the twinbill. Hoppie's two-RBI triple in game one provided the go-ahead runs for the Sharks, and his two-run home run in game two was part of a barrage of runs that produced the second win. In all, Hoppie went 6-for-8 with six RBI and three runs scored to lead HPU.
Redshirt freshman shortstop
Matthew Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, went 4-for-8 with a run scored.
Senior lefthander
Matthew Gunter of Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista (7-4), posted his fifth complete game in winning the second game as he extended his HPU single season strikeout record to 101 with eight Ks.
Senior lefthander
Jordan Knoll of Salem, Ore./South Salem (2-2), was the winner in relief in the first game.
Both schools end the season with a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
Game One
The Sharks used a three-run fifth and added another tally in the seventh, before holding on for a 5-3 triumph.
HPU chalked up a run in the second on an RBI single from
Trey Yukumoto, but the Vulcans countered in the top of the third when Phillip Steering picked up an RBI single to knot the game at 1-all.
In the fifth,
Tanner Tokunaga led off with a single and
Ryan Torres-Torioka reached on a fielder's choice. After a ground out Hoppie tripled for two runs and scored on
Jordan Mopas' RBI fielder's choice for a 4-1 advantage.
The Sharks plated their fifth run after loading the bases in the seventh, when
Mitchell Bumann was hit by Vulcan hurler Eric Vega for a 5-1 advantage. However HPU left the bases loaded in the frame.
UHH answered with two runs in the eighth with a walk and a single followed by Jacob Grijalva's RBI double and Austin Forney's RBI ground out.
Blake Flint went to the hill for HPU and struck out the next two batters to maintain a 5-3 lead.
In the ninth, Flint got the first two outs before Steering hit a sinking line drive that was snared by a diving Torres-Torioka to secure the win.
Tyler Van Stone started the game for HPU, but left the game in the fourth after striking out five and allowing two hits in the contest.
Knoll went picked up the win allowing two runs and four hits in 3.1 innings. Flint picked up his first save of the year in 1.2 innings of perfect ball with three strikeouts.
Vega struck out eight for UHH, going the distance allowing five runs and nine hits.
Game Two
The Sharks broke open the game in the third inning and never looked back in winning 12-1.
Yukumoto opened the third with a single, and Torres-Torioka later followed with a single ahead of a two-RBI double by
Codi Santana. Hoppie added an RBI single, while Tsutomi posted a sacrifice fly and Will Leskovic an RBI single.
In the fourth Tokunaga opened the inning with a single and Torres-Torioka drove him in with an RBI double down the left field line for a 6-0 lead.
The Vulcans picked up their only run in the sixth when a hit batsman, a walk and an error on a failed pickoff set up a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Segovia.
HPU answered with Hoppie's two-run homer in the sixth, then blew the game open with four in the seventh. Yukumoto plated one on an RBI single,
Jaison Craig added a two-RBI double down the line and Hoppie an RBI single to center for the 12-1 lead.
Gunter held the Vulcans at bay and ended the game with a pair of strikeouts, his seventh and eighth of the game, to total 101 for the season that leads the PacWest.
UHH starter Dylan Spain (1-6) took the loss after allowing six runs in the first three innings.
