WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University got a pair of strong pitching performances to take a pair of one-run games in a sweep of a doubleheader against Saint Martin's on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (6-2) held on for a 2-1 win in game one, then scored on a passed ball in the last inning for a 1-0 win in the seven inning second game.
"Our pitching came through for us in both games today," said HPU head coach
Garett Yukumoto. "We battled for every run offensively, but this will help us in the long run. But what more can you say when your pitchers get 15 strikeouts?"
Junior righthander
Charlie Brooks of Ventura, Calif./Buena (1-1) got his first win of the year by going 8.0 innings with seven strikeouts, while allowing just one run on six hits. Junior righthander
Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americana tallied his first save by striking out three and walking two in his one inning of work.
Senior rightander
William Clemens of Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol went the distance in winning game two by scattering three hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and a walk of scoreless ball.
Game two was a classic pitcher's duel as Clemens was locked against SMU's Ryan Dorney for five innings. Dorney allowed five hits, but struckout nine Sharks. Clark Streby fanned one with a hit and Luke Hare, who got the loss, allowed one hit and struckout two.
The Sharks left 11 on base through six innings. Junior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle doubled, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis, swung at a third strike for what would be a third out, but once again Saints catcher Bryant Nakagawa suffered a passed ball. Mopas went to first and Kapeliela scored for the game's only run.
The first game saw HPU score twice early, then hold on in the final inning.
The Sharks took advantage of a Saint Martin's fielding error to load the bases in the second that allowed Mopas to score on a double-play. In the third, senior designated hitter
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park rapped an RBI single to score senior
Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle who had doubled earlier in the inning.
The 2-0 held until the ninth when starter Brooks allowed a leadoff double and a walk. Savea issued a walk to load the bases, then recorded a strikeout. But Savea issued another walk to catcher Cameron Mosier to force in a run and leave the sacks jammed. But the junior struck out Kahi Hirano on three pitches for the second out and won the game by striking out Ryne Oshiro looking after issuing three balls to start the at-bat.
The wins close the non-conference portion of the HPU schedule. The Sharks open PacWest Conference play next Saturday with a doubleheader against PacWest newcomer Biola at Hans L'Orange Park. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
