Softball Sharks Sweep UBC at Sand Island

HONOLULU —Hawai'i Pacific University had to move venues to get play this weekend, and the Sharks made it pay as HPU picked up a doubleheader sweep over the NAIA's University of British Columbia (Canada) on Sunday at Sand Island Softball Park.

The Sharks (3-1) won the first game 7-4 despite the six errors on the field, and run-ruled the Thunderbirds 9-1 in six innings in game two in the series moved from Howard Okita Field due to wet conditions on the windward side of Oahu.

HPU senior infielder Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman led the attack going 6-for-7 in the two games with an RBI and four runs scored.

The Sharks came out swinging in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning with a UBC throwing error followed by a walk to load the bases. Emiliee Leonard drove home the first run followed by an RBI single from Jordan Curry and a two RBI single by Mary Dungey.

UBC hit the board in the third scoring once, and then add to that with two more in the fourth on three HPU errors making it a 4-3 game. The Sharks answered back with a run of their own as senior Noelani Boyer singled to right field and drew a run-down to bring home Sierra Dias.

The Sharks added two more runs in the sixth from senior Kiana Wolfe and a UBC fielding error that plated freshman Cieana Curran for a 7-3 lead.

UBC score more run in the top of the seventh off of three more HPU errors, but it wasn't enough to take the game for the Thunderbirds.

Curry (1-0) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington picked up her first win of the season as she pitched 6.1 innings allowing four hits, three runs (one earned), and a walk while grabbing four strikeouts in the process.

UBC's Zoe Gillis (1-2) threw all six innings allowing 13 hits, seven runs (six earned), and three walks. She also tallied a strikeout but suffered her second loss of the season.

The Thunderbirds would take an early lead in game two at the ocean-side park, with a huge double from Frances Ramsey brining in Paige Harbord for a 1-0 start. The Sharks answered back in the third with a booming home run to left field from Cieana Curran to tie the game at one. Dias followed with a base hit, advanced to third on a UBC fielding error, and scored on another fielding error to give HPU the 2-1 lead.

The fifth inning was all HPU with six runs to shut down UBC. It started with two base hits from Dias and Boyer. After a UBC pitcher change, Curry hit another homer to left field brining in three runs. The Sharks wouldn't stop there. Amidst some drizzle on the field, UBC pitcher Emma Tuson hit two Sharks in a row followed and followed that with two wild pitches to advance the runners. Junior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo brought another run with a base hit to right center and senior Sienna Santiago took a pitch to the back to load the bases. Curran drew a walk giving HPU the free run, and freshman Ashley Iseri would drove in the sixth run with a base hit down the left field line for an 8-1 lead.

In the sixth and final inning, sophomore Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato cranked a huge double to right center setting up Cantero-Kawelo RBI single through the left side to plate the mercy rule run.

Junior Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic, pitched all six innings for the Sharks allowing four hits, one run, three walks and grabbing five strikeouts in the process. She picked up her first win of the season (1-1).

Chantelle Twynstra (0-2) pitched four innings allowing eight hits, four runs (three earned), a walk and recorded a strike out. Tuson threw one inning allowing five earned runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

HPU is scheduled to begin PacWest Conference play Thursday afternoon against Biola. The first pitch is at 1 p.m. at Howard A. Okita Field.
