WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – After two blowout losses, Hawai'i Pacific University surprised No. 10 California Baptist by taking game two of a Saturday doubleheader 6-4 in PacWest Conference action at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (10-9, 4-7) came back for the win after falling to CBU in the first game 12-1. The 10th ranked Lancers (14-4, 6-1) had a seven-game win streak snapped with their first loss in PacWest play this season.
The Sharks used a four-run bottom of the sixth in the seven inning second game to snap a four-game losing streak.
The Sharks opened the scoring in the third as they put runners on the corners with one out for senior second baseman
Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, who laid down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled and allowed senior catcher
Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza to score. Junior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle later beat out a two-out infield grounder for an RBI in driving in junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School for a 2-0 lead.
Following an in the fifth, Cal Baptist answered with a two out, two RBI single from John Glenn to tie the game. Then Andrew Bash smashed a line drive down the left field line that hit the foul pole for a two-run homer and a 4-2 lead for the Lancers.
But in the sixth, the Sharks used a CBU pitching meltdown to its advantage. After a leadoff flyout, Kapeliela walked that chased starter Andrew Bernstein for Justin Montgomery. Senior designated hitter
Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS drew a 3-2 walk. Kapeliela and Santana advanced on a passed ball to put runners at second and third, before Montgomery threw a wild pitch on ball four to senior third baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park. Kapeliela beat the throw at the plate to bring HPU within a run. CBU changed pitchers again to Jorge Valerio, who walked senior shortstop
Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon and Woods to score Santana. A third pitching change brought in Angel Delgado who gave up a first pitch two RBI single to junior pinch hitter
Marc Sauceda of Temecula, Calif./Chaparral to put HPU up 6-4.
HPU lifted senior righthanded starter Billy Clemens of Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol (2-2) who went six innings, allowing six hits and four unearned runs while striking out two. Junior reliever
Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano worked a nearly perfect seventh, allowing a walk for his fourth save.
Bernstein went 5.1 innings for CBU, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Montgomery (0-1) was hung with his first loss allowing two runs on two walks.
Game one featured the Lancers scoring three runs in three consecutive innings and added three more in the top of the ninth for the 12-1 win. Starting pitcher/DH Bash was the big hitter in the first contest, going 3-for-5 with five RBI with a double and a triple.
The Sharks picked up their only run in the seventh inning when Santana belted a solo home run to right field.
Bash pushed his record to 4-0 in going six innings with four hits. Reliever Ryan Silva struckout three Sharks, but allowed the only HPU run on his only hit. Matt Amrhein picked up a strikeout in a third of an inning, while Morgan Earman worked the final inning with a strikeout and hit.
