LAS VEGAS – The No. 19 Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team continued its mainland road swing, falling to No. 14 Rollins 5-3 at the Darling Tennis Center.
The Sharks (0-6) battled the Tars (5-5) through all nine points, with one point left unfinished.
The Sharks picked up one of their three points in doubles as
Jack Lyttle and
Gerardo Irrarrazabal won at No. 3, beating Frederick Danielson and Guilherme Dumit 8-5. The Tars chalked up an 8-6 win at No. 1 as Nicolo De Fraia and Guillermo Nicolas edged HPU's 20th ranked duo of
Maxime Gayte and
Benjamin Loccisano, then Rollins Ziad Melhaoui and Atakan Gezer got by
Juan Erro and
Adrian Elduque 8-5 at No. 2.
HPU made a comeback early in singles as Erro won at No. 5 over Melhaoui 6-2, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-all. Then Lyttle handled Daniel Ferl 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to put the Sharks up 3-2.
But the Tars came back at No. 1 with De Fraia defeating Gayte 6-3, 7-5, and 19th ranked Nicolas downing 27th ranked Loccisano 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2. The match was decided at No. 4 singles, when Gezer got by 46th ranked Irrarrazabal 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
No. 6 singles went unfinished as Elduque was up 4-3 in the second set after falling to Danielson 6-4 in the first set.
The Sharks are back in action on Monday morning at the Darling Tennis Center, taking on No. 11 Indianapolis in an 8:30 a.m. HST (11:30 a.m. PDT).
