Sharks Upset No. 3 Dixie State in Double Dip Split

HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University snapped the perfect record of No. 3 Dixie State on Wednesday, taking the first game of a PacWest Conference doubleheader 2-1, but falling 6-3 in the second game at Sand Island Softball Field.

The Sharks (9-7, 6-4) used the one-two punch of senior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning and junior Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington.

Boyer put the Sharks up in the first inning with a two-run home run down the left field line that drove in junior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who drew a leadoff walk.

Curry (2-2) made that lead stand as she hurled a complete game three-hitter at the Trailblazers, allowing a run and five walks with two strikeouts to even her record.

The game stayed at 2-0 until the top of the sixth, when Dixie State got a two out, RBI single to deep right from Cassidy Morton and pinch runner Taylor Godfrey sped all the way from first to pull DSU within a run.

Curry and the Sharks shut down that inning and sent the Trailblazers into the loss column for the first time with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

DSU's Cambrie Hazel suffered her first loss (8-1) with a complete game of six innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The Sharks fell in game two, but it wasn't without fight.

A scoreless contest until the top of the fourth, Dixie State drew a leadoff walk and single before Bailey Gaffin laced an RBI single into right. Trailblazer Kenzie Sawyer stepped up and ripped the next pitch over the fence in left center to give DSU a 4-0 lead.

The Sharks countered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Boyer started things off with a quick single to third base followed by a double down the third base line by sophomore Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab to put runners at second and third. Curry followed with an RBI single through the left side, and senior Sienna Santiago of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea followed suit with an RBI base hit to right field. After a Dixie State pitching change, freshman Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell, cranked another double to right field to bring home Curry for run number three.

The Trailblazers added two more runs with RBI singles by Gaffin in the fifth and sixth.

HPU had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded a runner at third, then went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Because of a facility curfew, the game was called official after six innings.

Senior Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek (1-2) pitched for the first three innings allowing four earned runs off of five hits with a walk. Sophomore Emilee Leonard of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul finished the game for the Sharks allowing two unearned runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

Dixie's Alexandria Melendez pitched 3.1 innings for the Trailblazers allowing three runs on five hits. She recorded a walk and four strikeouts and tallied the win (7-0). Madi Dove came in for one innings allowing one hit and a walk, and Hazel came back to finish the final 1.2 innings. She didn't allow a hit or a walk and grabbed three strikeouts to give her the third save on the season.

Due to wet conditions at Howard Okita Field, the Sharks will return to Sand Island Park on Thursday morning to face California Baptist in a PacWest doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
