ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Hawai'i Pacific University baseball team was its own worst enemy on Saturday as HPU committed six errors that allowed Dixie State to take both games of a PacWest Conference doubleheader 5-4 in 11 innings and 9-5 in the seven-inning nightcap at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Sharks (11-11, 5-9) committed five errors as all five runs for the Trailblazers (11-17, 7-11) were unearned in the 11-inning first game, then another error gave DSU its first runs in the second.
HPU got a strong offensive day from senior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, who went 4-for-6 on the day (2-for-3 in both games), with a home run, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis was 3-for-7 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
The Sharks and Trailblazers needed extra innings to decide the first game.
After Dixie State turned errors into runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0, the Sharks came back in the top of the fourth. After senior infielder/designated hitter

Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai laced a one-out double to the fence in left center to drive in Kapeliela for a 1-0 lead.
It was short-lived as DSU as a double down the left field line by Jake Engel followed by a throwing error to first on an attempted sacrifice bunt tied the game by Joe Raymond tied the game and sent Raymond to second. He moved to third on a successful sacrifice, then scored on a suicide squeeze sacrifice bunt by Ben Petty-Hull to put Dixie up 2-1 with the unearned runs.
In the bottom of the third, the Trailblazers broke the game open with four runs thanks to a bases loaded walk, a bases loaded wild pitch, and a two-RBI single by Raymond. DSU added another run in the fourth with an RBI single.
The Sharks got one back in the top of the fifth when Layosa put a shot in the trees beyond the left field fence for his first home run of the season.
Dixie countered with an RBI single for one run and got another on a caught stealing rundown that allowed a second to come in to go up 9-2 after five.
The highlight hit for HPU came in the top of the sixth, after singles by Hoppie and Kapeliela. Mopas crushed a 1-1 pitch high and deep, clearing the trees and an access road in left field that brought the Sharks within four a 9-5.
