TURLOCK, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University wrapped up the 2018 Turlock Tournament of Champions with a 5-1 victory over California State East Bay and a 4-2 loss to No. 13 Sonoma State on Sunday at the Pedretti Sports Complex.
The Sharks (11-12) finished the prestigious tournament at 2-3.
The Sharks and East Bay were scoreless until the fifth inning. That's when HPU hit the board with three runs on four hits. Freshman
Mary Dungey started things off with a base hit up the middle and sophomore
Miki Takara pinch ran for her. Takara was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and was brought home by senior
Sienna Santiago with an RBI single up the middle. Sophomore
Sierra Dias tallied an RBI single bringing home Santiago, and freshman
Cieana Curran cranked another triple to left field to get the third run of the inning.
The Pioneers tallied their only run in the fifth off of a sacrifice fly to center field making it 3-1 Sharks after five frames.
The Sharks added two more runs in the sixth to finalize the win. They started with three base hits from junior
Jordan Curry, freshman
Taylor Okamura, and
Mary Dungey. Sophomore
Emilee Leonard was walked on the next at-bat giving the Sharks the free run.
Sienna Santiago brought home the final run with an RBI single to right center field making it 5-1.
Senior
Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek pitched for all seven innings allowing just one run off of eight hits and two walks. She tallied three strikeouts and takes home the win bringing her to 2-3 on the season.
The Pioneer's Bailee Glover (5-3) pitched five innings allowing three earned runs off of five hits and a walk. She grabbed three strikeouts on the Sharks but suffered the loss. Taylor Lara pitched the final two frames allowing two earned runs off of six hits and a walk.
The Sharks were lead by
Sienna Santiago who hit two for three with a run scored and two RBI.
Mary Dungey and Jurdan Curry hit two for four on the game with a run scored and
Taylor Okamura hit two for three with a run scored.
No. 13 Sonoma State was next up for the Sharks to close the tournament.
The Seawolves came out swinging scoring a run off of a double, a stolen base, and an RBI single up the middle taking an early lead on the Sharks.
HPU tied up the game at 1-1 in the third inning as junior
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo singled and stole a base. She was brought home by
Sierra Dias with an infield single.
Sonoma State took over the lead again in the fifth with a run scored, and extended it with two more runs in the sixth off of two hits (one triple) and an HPU fielding error making it 4-1 after six innings.
The Sharks tallied a run in the final frame with freshman
Ashley Iseri's base hit to left field bringing home
Miki Takara to bring the score to its final of 4-2 Seawolves.
Sophomore
Emilee Leonard pitched for all six innings allowing four runs (three earned) off of nine hits and three walks. She picked up three strikeouts but took the loss bringing her to 2-2 on the season.
Sonoma's Brielle Vidmar (10-3) pitched all seven innings allowing two earned runs off of seven hits and a walk. She took the Sharks for three strikeouts and picked up the win.

Ashley Iseri who hit two for three in the game with an RBI.
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo hit one for three in the game with a run scored.
HPU resumes PacWest Conference play on the mainland Tuesday when they face-off against Dominican (Calif.) in San Rafael, Calif. The first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
