Walk-Off Grand Slam Leads Sharks to Sweep of Point Loma

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Junior Jordan Mopas smashed a walk-off, grand slam home run in the bottom of the 11th inning of game two to lead Hawai'i Pacific University to a PacWest Conference doubleheader sweep of Point Loma Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (9-5, 3-3) made comebacks in both games to beat the Sea Lions (7-8, 3-3) 4-2 and 5-3.

HPU came back in game one with a three-run seventh for that win, then followed with a ninth-inning tying run and the slam in the 11th for the game two victory.

Senior catcher Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza  posted three hits in the two games to lead the Sharks. Mopas, the junior leftfielder from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis, and junior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle collected a hit in each game, with Kapeliela adding an RBI.

The second game of the twinbill proved to be the most dramatic. It was a classic pitchers' duel throughout much of the contest. HPU broke up Point Loma starter Trevor Abshire's no-hit bid with a single by Woods to lead off the sixth inning. HPU lefthander Marc Sauceda of Temecula Calif./Chaparral, scattered three hits through six innings with eight strikeouts before being lifted.

The scoreless duel saw PLNU threaten in the second and the Sharks in the seventh with baserunners to third, but the pitching snuffed out the threat.

In the ninth, Point Loma drew first blood after a John Balliet single and an RBI double from Micah Pries. The hits drove senior righthanded reliever Evan-Thomas May of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy from the game after 2.1 innings with four hits, the run and a strikeout. Junior lefthander Joshua Muneno of Honolulu/Maryknoll, closed the inning with the Sea Lions up 1-0.

The Sharks answered in the bottom of the ninth with senior second baseman Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle drawing a one-out walk. The Sea Lions then replaced Abshire, who had pitched 8.1 innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts, with Balliet. A two-out wild pitch from Balliet sent Smith to second where he was lifted for a pinch runner, junior Matthew Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City. Kapelliela lined an RBI double to right center to send the game to extra innings at 1-1.

Point Loma broke the tie in the top of the 11th. After an error and a single put runners on the corners with two out, the Sharks intentionally walked Tyler Flores to load the bases. The Sea Lions Darian Sylvester took advantage of the situation with a two RBI single up the middle to give PLNU a 3-1 lead.

PLNU put Nicholas Cornelius on the mound in the bottom of the 11th and the Sharks drew walks from Ryan Torres-Torioka and Tanner Tokunaga. Tommy Paul came on and walked Tsutomi to load the bases. The Sea Lions called on a third pitcher in the inning, Ryan Casper, to face Mopas. Mopas took a strike and fouled off the next pitch before seeing three straight balls. Casper came back with a 3-2 fastball that Mopas sent screaming over the left field fence for his team-leading third home run of the season and the walk-off 5-3 win.

Muneno (2-0) got the win going 2.1 innings with two runs on three hits and striking out three.  Sea Lions reliever Paul (0-1) suffered the loss.

The series opener was another fine pitching performance and the Sharks took advantage of six Point Loma errors to take the 4-2 win.

HPU junior righthander Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothill (2-3) went eight innings to get the win allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Savea picked up his third save by working the ninth with a strikeout and a walk.

Point Loma reliever Robert Ortiz III got the loss, pitching one inning and allowing three unearned runs on two hits with three walks. Starter Garret Irvin threw six innings allowing one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts. Paul threw one inning with a strikeout and walk.

The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Sea Lions Colby Kaneshiro used an RBI single to put PLNU up 1-0.

The Sharks answered in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three consecutive errors by PLNU third baseman Travis Takata to score. Tokunaga reached on a fielding error, and went to third on a throwing error that allowed Smith to get on. Then Mopas reached on another throwing error that allowed Tokunaga to score. Both Smith and Mopas advanced to third and second, but were stranded.

The Sea Lions went back up in the seventh when Takata made up for the run with a towering home run to right field for a 2-0 lead.

HPU came back in the bottom of the seventh, as two fielding errors and a walk loaded the bases for Kapeliela who tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Pinch hitter senior Cody Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS, followed with a second sac fly to go up 3-2, and freshman third baseman Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai rapped an RBI down the right field line to give the Sharks the 4-2 lead.

A fielding error and a walk allowed Point Loma a chance in the ninth inning, but Savea got a strikeout and a flyout to close the contest.

After a day off on Sunday, the Sharks and Sea Lions play another PacWest doubleheader on Monday evening. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
