No. 4 Sharks Take No. 16 Sonoma State 5-4

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The No. 4 Hawai'i Pacific University women chalked up another road win at a nationally ranked opponent as the Sharks defeated No. 16 Sonoma State 5-4 at the Seawolf Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
 
The Sharks (7-0) again came from behind for the win, as the Seawolves (8-3) led HPU 2-1 after doubles play.
 
The Sharks answered by sweeping the top four singles spots to win the match.
 
The doubles points were so tight, that both teams won on tie breaks with a close third point.
 
HPU got the win at No. 1 doubles with Lena Lutzeier and Oceane Adam upsetting 17th ranked Jensyn Warren and Amanda Zuidema 8-7 (7-4). Sonoma followed with an upset at No. 2 as Carolyn Brooner and Jenna DeTurk edged the Sharks 11th ranked duo of Lara Meccico and Barbora Kijasova 8-7 (7-5). The Seawolves claimed No. 3 with Hannah Highsmith and Katherine Long beating HPU's Heloise Le Normand and Leticia Gonzales dos Santos 8-5.
 
In singles action, HPU started the comeback with 10th ranked Meccico handing Zuidema 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, followed by ninth ranked Lutzeier ripping 18th ranked Warren 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.
 
The Sharks got a huge boost when newcomer Debora Echeverria downed Brooner 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 for a 4-2 adavantage. The Seawolves answered with Long beating Le Normand 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6, but HPU grabbed the win with 21st ranked Adam beat Clarisa Colling 7-5, 6-3 for the deciding point. SSU won the final point at No. 5 as De Turk and Kijasova split sets 4-6, 7-5 before De Turk grabbed the win 17-15 in extra play in the deciding 10-point set.
 
The No. 4 Sharks continue their nationally-ranked mainland road trip on Friday when they visit No. 14 UC San Diego for a noon HST (2 p.m. PST) match.
