No. 1 Azusa Pacific Rips Sharks in Doubleheader

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University watched No. 1 Azusa Pacific dominate both games of a PacWest Conference doubleheader, winning 18-4 and 13-0 on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (16-19, 10-17) never lead in either game while the No. 1 Cougars (32-3, 22-3) handed HPU its first shutout of the season in the second game.
 
Senior designated hitter Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS was 2-for-3 in the first game with an RBI, while senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was 1-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
 
Junior lefthander Marc Sauceda (2-4) of Temecula, Calif./Chaparral pitched 1.2 innings allowing seven runs on three hits with four walks in getting the loss. Junior righthander Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap threw for 4.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while picking up two strikeouts, and sophomore righthander Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge saw two thirds of an inning allowing two runs (one earned) off of two hits. Junior righthander Santiago Camarena of Houston, Texas/Clements saw just one third of an inning allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with two walks while sophomore lefthander Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View closed out the final one and two thirds innings allowing a hit and two walks.
 
The Cougar's Isaiah Carranza pitched 2.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts before being was replaced by Tripp Aversa (2-0) who went for 5.1 innings allowing just two hits with three strikeouts in picking up the win. David May closed the game's final frame putting down three of the four batters he faced.
 
APU started things off in the second inning posting seven runs. The first two runs were scored on walks and Goudreau cranked a triple to bring in three more runs. He was brought home with a sacrifice fly and the final run scored on a double and a base hit making it 7-0.
 
The Sharks had high hopes in the third putting up four of their own runs. Junior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City singled up the middle and stole second base while senior rightfielder Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena was walked. Tokunaga stole third and Torres-Torioka advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, walked to load the bases for Kapeliela who smacked a three-RBI double to center field. He was brought home with a base knock from Santana to bring the game to 7-4.
 
HPU stayed steady with the Cougars until the seventh frame when APU posted another six runs on five hits, including a solo homerun from Osvaldo Tovalin and an HPU throwing error to take it to 13-4.
 
APU topped it with another five runs in the eighth including another triple from Goudreau and an HPU throwing error closing the game at 18-4.
 
Game two was all Azusa Pacific as Cougar pitcher Layne Henderson (6-0) posted a two-hitter for six innings with two walks and nine strikeouts. Reliever Hayden Jorgenson pitched a perfect final frame putting down all three batters he faced with one strikeout.
 
HPU senior righthander Billy Clemens (4-4) of Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol tossed three innings giving up seven runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and two walks with a strikeout to take the loss. Senior righthander Evan-Thomas May of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy pitched for 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while picking up three strikeouts. Junior righthander Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano found the final two thirds of an inning giving up two runs on four hits.
 
APU tallied two runs in the first frame on four singles and added four more in the second off of an HPU fielding error, a base hit, and a three run homer from Tovalin to give an early 6-0 lead.
 
The Cougars added one more run in the third on another HPU fielding error followed by a sacrifice fly to plate the runner.
 
As May came to pitch, the next three frames ran quick with just two hits from APU, but the final frame shut the Sharks down for good. The Cougars put up another six runs on seven hits including a double to end the game at 13-0.

The Sharks are set to close the series with the top-ranked Cougars on Monday night at Hans L'Orange. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
