PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University closed the regular season by shutting out Valdosta State (Ga.) 9-0 in women's tennis interregional play Sunday at West Florida's Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
The No. 5 Sharks (15-2) won their fourth straight match. The Blazers (19-2) fell for the second time in as many days.
HPU dominated the match, losing only three games in any set on the day.
HPU opened by claiming all three doubles points, led by 22nd ranked
Lena Lutzeier and
Oceane Adam at No. 1, ripping Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven 8-2.
Lara Meccico and
Barbora Kijasova followed with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Daniella Barta and Anke Poncelet, while Leticia Gonzales dos Santos and
Debora Echeverria claimed No. 3 with an 8-2 win against Hera Brynjarsdottir and Taylor Vinge.
The Sharks continued their strong play in singles as well with Lutzeier, the second ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, easily beating Schmidt 6-1, 6-1. Meccico, 12th ranked in singles, downed Widdershoven 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, while Adam, ranked 32nd in singles, won 6-0, 6-3 against Barta at No. 3.
The closest point was at No. 4, where Echeverria handled Brynjarsdottir 6-2, 6-3, as dos Santos beat Vinge 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, and Kijasova defeated Amelia Cornwall 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
HPU now travels to Surprise, Ariz., for the 2018 PacWest Conference Championships. The Sharks await their opponent for a Thursday match at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
