Sharks Run Rule Holy Names Twice In Sweep

HAYWARD, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University totally dominated Holy Names on Thursday in PacWest Conference softball action, taking both games of a doubleheader 8-0 in five innings at Pioneer Field.

The Sharks (21-14, 14-10) used both the bat and pitching to run their win streak to six straight games. The Hawks (3-35, 3-23) fell for the 12th straight game.

HPU was paced offensively by the hot bat of senior leftfielder Sienna Santiago of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea who was 4-for-7 on the day with four RBIs and four runs scored.

Junior righthander Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington threw a near gem in the second game, allowing a fifth-inning single to break up a no-hit bid, and allowing one walk to face just two batters over the minimum. Curry (5-5) struck out three while using only 59 pitches in recording her seventh complete game and first shutout of the year.

Sophomore righthander Emilee Leonard (5-2) of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul, faced just 21 batters in five innings of game one, allowing three hits and two walks and a hit batsman on 80 pitches. It was her fifth complete game and second shutout of the season.

The Sharks started things off with a single run in the first frame as Santiago walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman, and plated by senior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning with a base knock to left field.

HPU topped that with two more runs in the second on two hits. Leonard walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Taylor Okamura Henderson, Nev./Coronado. Santiago tallied an RBI single to bring home Leonard. Another single from Dias and a Boyer walk loaded the bases for freshman Cieana Curran who was hit by a pitch to advance the runners and give HPU a 3-0 lead.

The third frame sealed the deal for the Sharks as they posted five runs on three hits with an HNU error. Both Curry and Leonard were walked followed by another sacrifice bunt from Okamura to put runners on second and third. Another walk loaded the bases for Santiago who cranked a towering double to center field bringing in all three runners. On the very next at-bat, Dias doubled down the right field line to bring home Santiago and the seventh run. The final run was brought in with an RBI single for Curran.

HPU closed out the remaining two innings to complete the shutout and end the game after five innings by the eight-run rule.

HNU's Haighley Kissee (1-15) pitched the first two innings for the Hawks giving up five earned runs on three hits and six walks with two strikeouts. Chailey Stewart finished the final three innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Game two saw the Sharks grab a run in both the second and third innings. In the second, senior Kiana Wolfe of Redding, Calif./Enterprise circled the bases on a deep shot to centerfield that was dropped and HPU was up 1-0.

In the third, Curran belted her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right center, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

HPU claimed the game in the fifth inning, pounding out six runs on five hits. Curry tallied a two RBI double to start things off bringing in both Dias and Curran who had reached on walks. Freshman pinch hitter Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney doubled to plate Curry, and Wolfe singled up the middle to bring in Iseri. Sophomore Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato showcased her power with a two-run homer to left field, her second of the season, for the final runs of the game in the Shark's second 8-0 shutout of the day.

The Hawk's Stewart (2-15) came back for more in game two pitching 4.2 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and four walks. Kissee finished the final out of the game facing four batters and allowing a hit and two walks with her strikeout.

The Sharks remain in the Bay Area for their next two games, taking on Academy of Art in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, Calif. First pitch for both days are scheduled for 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
