SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team chalked up a 5-1 victory over Holy Names in consolation bracket play at the 2018 PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.
The Sharks (2-13) snapped a four match losing streak with the win. The Hawks (5-12) dropped their second straight match.
HPU jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles and nearly swept the duo competiton.
HPU got its first point at No. 3 doubles as
Jack Lyttle and
Adrian Elduque downed Taylor Bryant and Valentin Baranyl 8-1, before
Benjamin Loccisano and
Juan Erro were victorious at No. 2 doubles against Vincent Hennebelle and Javier Luque 8-4. No. 1 doubles came down to a tiebreaker as HNU's Alex Vinee-Munoz and Hugo Colpart edged
Maxime Gayte and
Gerardo Irrarrazabal 8-7 by winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
In singles action, Gayte claimed the point at No. 1 by beating Vinee-Munoz 6-2, 6-2 and Irrarrazabal won at No. 3 over Hennebelle 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to go up 4-1. The Sharks won the match when Erro came in at No. 4 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Luque to stop the match at 5-1.
The other three matches were unfinished.
The Sharks advance to play in the fifth place match at the tournament to close the season. Sixth seed HPU faces eighth seed Biola on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m. MST) at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
