Sharks Close Trip On Sweep By Holy Names

BRISBANE, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University ended its northern California softball road trip being swept by Academy of Art 7-3 and 4-0 in PacWest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Mission Blue Field.
 
The Sharks (21-18, 14-14) dropped all four games in the series to the Urban Knights (35-12, 18-6).
 
HPU was paced offensively by freshman centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell who was 4-for-7 with an RBI, and sophomore infielder Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman who went 3-for-7 with a run scored.
 
HPU hit board in the first inning as Dias singled up the middle, then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out from senior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning. Dias was plated by Curran with a single down the left field line to give the Sharks an early 1-0 lead.
 
ARTU came back with two runs in the second frame. After an error allowed Samantha Klune to reach, Brooke Larsen tallied a base hit and advanced to second on a fielder's choice from Gracie Sotomayor that erased Klune. A walk loaded the bases, and Lauryn Henderson's single to right center brought home two runs with Sotomayors being unearned.
 
They topped it with two more runs in the third with a hit batter followed by an RBI double from Brenna Mitchell for one run and an RBI single by Brenna Younquist to bring in Mitchell gave the Urban Knights a 4-1 advantage.
 
ARTU scored two more runs in the fourth on an HPU fielding error to bring the game to 6-1.
 
The Sharks tallied another run in the fifth as senior Sienna Santiago of Ele'ele, Hawai'i/Waimea was hit by the pitch and Dias reached on an HNU fielding error. Boyer grabbed a base hit to load the bases and freshman Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney plated Santiago with an RBI ground out.
 
The Urban Knights grabbed their final run in the fifth that started with a double from Sotomayor who advanced to third on yet another HPU fielding error. She was plated on a fielder's choice to make the game 7-2.
 
HPU added one more run in the seventh frame from Curran's single to left field and sophomore Emilee Leonard's double to left center ending the game at 7-3.
 
Emilee Leonard (5-3) of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul pitched all six innings for the Sharks allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits with five walks in taking the loss.
 
Brooke Larsen pitched all seven innings for ARTU allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with a walk. She grabbed eight total strikeouts in the contest and improved to 19-3 on the season.
 
Game two was saw the Urban Knights break open with two runs in the third inning to start the scoring. Gabi Hirsch tallied a single to get on base and an HPU throwing error allowed Jayda Alaan to get on and advanced both to second and third. Another base hit from Mitchell plated the two unearned runs.
 
In the fifth, a Hirsch single and stolen base followed by an Alaan RBI single brought the game to 3-0.
 
ARTU finalized their score in the sixth on a Klune triple and a Dom Seva'aetasi sacrifice fly to end the game in a 4-0 shutout.
 
Junior Jordan Curry (5-6) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington pitched all six innings for the Sharks allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.
 
Brenna Mitchell (3-3) claimed the win for HNU as she pitched all seven innings allowing six hits while taking HPU for nine strikeouts.
 
The Sharks are idle until Friday when travel to the Big Island for a makeup doubleheader at Hawai'i Hilo with a Noon start. The Sharks return to Oahu for Saturday's season finale and Senior Day doubleheader against Chaminade. First pitch against the Silverswords is at Noon at Howard Okita Field.
