WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Senior
Wyatt Hoppie's walk-off RBI single capped a three-run bottom of the ninth inning that led Hawai'i Pacific University to a PacWest Conference doubleheader sweep over Concorida Irvine on Saturday with 6-0 and 10-9 victories at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (15-15, 9-13) never trailed in the opening contest, but had to overcome rain and a blown lead before coming back to beat the Eagles (11-20, 8-14).
HPU were paced offensively by junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis HS, who went 4-for-5 with a homerun, five RBIs and collected three walks. Senior firstbaseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle who was 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, had only one hit in the two games, but it was a big one. After HPU had scored twice with two out in the ninth, Hoppie stepped up with runners at first and second. He ripped the first pitch he saw in the ninth down the third base line to score redshirt freshman pinch hitter
Joe Morin of Upland, Calif./Upland with the walk-off winning run to take the wild 10-9 contest.
The second game started with the Sharks plating two runs in the first on a Kapeliela RBI double and a throwing error that allowed a second run to score.
The Eagles got single runs to tie the game on a passed ball in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
But the Sharks retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from junior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City for a 3-2 advantage.
As the occasional sprinkle turned to a steady rain, the Sharks held CUI in the top of the fifth and collected three runs on an RBI ground out, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch for a 6-2 lead.
As the rain continued harder, play continued as the game was paused twice to try to dry slick spots that were developing. And the Eagles took advantage of the conditions by scoring six runs on a wild pitch, two bases-loaded hit batsmen, an RBI single and a two RBI double from Alex Dimascio that dropped just inside the right field foul line and gave CUI an 8-6 lead.
The rain passed and the Sharks got a run back in the seventh on a none-out, bases-loaded double play drove in a run to pull HPU back within a run at 8-7.
The final inning saw the Eagles collect what appeared to be an insurance run on a Dominic Castro RBI triple that plated Dillon Millar. When the throw to the plate to try to get Millar got by HPU senior catcher
Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza, Castro tried to score. Woods recovered the ball and outraced Castro to tag him out.
In the bottom of the ninth, HPU got walks from Mopas and junior pinch hitter
Gabriel Garcia of Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian, but also recorded two outs. When Morin stepped up, Eagle reliever Jason McLellan suddenly lost it. McLellan bounced three straight wild pitches to allow Mopas and Garcia to score and tie the game at 9-all. Morin walked on the fourth pitch and senior senior rightfielder
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena followed with a walk. CUI replaced McLellan with Isaiah Bettencourt to face Hoppie. The senior third baseman hit Bettencourt's first pitch for the game winner.
HPU reliever
Joshua Savea (2-0) got the win by facing the last Eagle batter in the ninth. CUI's McLellan (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
In the first game, HPU got a sacrifice fly from Mopas in the second to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Sharks scored two more in the sixth inning on an RBI double from sophomore second baseman
Matthew Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City and an RBI single from Mopas.
Then in the eighth, Mopas crushed the Eagles with a three-run homer to left field for a 6-0 lead.
Mopas was also the center of attention defensively. He threw out Tony Garcia at the plate trying to score from second on a single to end the third inning, and threw out Castro at third trying to go from first-to-third on a single.
HPU got a strong performance from junior righthander
Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothill, who went 7.2 innings allowing five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Junior lefthander
Joshua Muneno of Honolulu/Maryknoll got his first save, pitching 1.1 innings allowing a hit and striking out one.
Junior lefthander
Marc Sauceda of Temecula, Calif./Chaparral did not get a decision in game two, pitching five innings and allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
CUI starter Neil Lang (1-5) got the loss in the first game.
The Sharks and Eagles conclude the PacWest Conference series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one starts at 4 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
