Sharks Close Season with Split Against UH Hilo

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University closed the season with a doubleheader split against Hawai'i Hilo taking a PacWest Conference 3-2 win, but losing a 7-2 non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (22-28, 15-25) took two games of the three-game series against the Vulcans (21-27, 16-22) this weekend and four-of-six games in the season series.

Senior righthander Evan-Thomas May (2-1) of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy closed his collegiate career with his second complete game of the season in the seven-inning first game, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Senior Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS, led the offense in the twinbill, going 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored with a pair of doubles and a triple.

Senior righthander Billy Clemens (4-5) of Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol picked up the loss in the second game allowing seven runs – six earned – in three innings on 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout. Sophomore righty Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge allowed two hits and a walk in two innings, with junior righthander Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap pitched two innings allowing a hit with a strikeout. Junior righthander Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano dispatched the four batters he faced with a strikeout and sophomore lefty Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View struck out two Vulcans in closing the game and the season.

May flirted with a no-hitter in the opening game. He gave up a walk in the second and hit a batter in the third for the only baserunners in the first four frames.

Vulcan Jaryn Kanbara led off the fifth with a single to break up May's no-hit bid, but the Sharks got out of the inning unscathed.

HPU got all of the runs they needed in the bottom of the fifth. Senior catcher Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza singled to center and sophomore second baseman Trey Yukumoto of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua beat out a bunt for a hit ahead of senior rightfielder Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena smacked a two-RBI double to left field. After a single by senior Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, Santana bashed an RBI double to right center to give the Sharks a 3-0 lead.

HPU and May kept the shutout until the seventh. UH Hilo led off with a shot to center from Kila Zuttermeister that was allowed to drop between Shark outfielders for a double. Dylan Sugimoto singled to put runners on the corners, but with two outs Jonathan Segovia ripped a two RBI single up the middle to end the shutout and put the Vulcans within a run at 3-2. Despite another single from Phillip Steering, May forced a ground out to end the inning and preserve the win.

Hilo starter Travis Burleson (4-6) allowed the three runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Kekai Mahiko gave up four walks, but no runs or hits in 1.1 innings, while Devan Elson closed the game with a strikeout.

In the second game, the Vulcans struck for five runs in the first inning, and added single tallies in the second and fourth for the 7-3 win. A leadoff double from Kyle Yamada and single from Segovia set the table for an RBI single from Steering. Edwin Stanberry followed with another RBI single for a 2-0 lead. After UHH loaded the bases, Clemens issued RBI walks to Zuttermeister and Yamata and hit Sugimoto to put the Vulcans up 5-0.

In the second, RJ Romo doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when a throw home after a fly out got through Woods and allowed Romo to score.

The Sharks scored in the bottom of the third as junior leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis HS bashed a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield fence to give HPU its first run.

The Vulcans responded with a run in the fourth after a pair of singles, Sakata reached on a throwing error that allowed Reese Kato to score as UHH went up 7-1.

HPU came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Santana doubled and Hoppie singled ahead of a sacrifice fly from senior Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle.

In the eighth HPU collected its final run of the season when Santana tripled to right field and Hoppie sent an RBI single through the left side of the infield to cut the UHH lead to 7-4.
