Sharks Win 16-5, Lose 3-2 at UH Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored 12 runs in the last three innings of game one on the way to a 16-5 victory at Hawai'i Hilo, but UHH came back in game two for a 3-2 win in a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Wong Stadium.
 
The Sharks (19-27, 13-25) overcame a 5-4 deficit in the first game for the win, while the Vulcans (20-24, 16-20) trailed 2-0 before collecting three runs for the win.
 
Sophomore rightfielder Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena, returned to the Big Island with a big bat, going 4-for-9 with a double and four RBIs. Junior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, was 3-for-8 on the day with two RBIs and three runs scored.
 
Sophomore righthanded reliever Evan Spitzer (1-2) of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge, collected the game one win throwing 3.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits and a walk. Senior righthanded starter Billy Clemens of Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol, got no decision in the opener in pitching 5.1 innings allowing five runs on 12 hits with three walks and a strikeout.
 
Junior righthander Josh Savea (2-3) of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano, got the loss in relief in game two, allowing an unearned run without a hit and two walks in two innings while striking out five. Senior righthander Evan-Thomas May of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy, pitched six innings allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with two strikeouts.
 
The Vulcans used seven pitchers in the first game, with the loss going to Travis Burleson (4-5) in relief, allowing two runs – one unearned – on three hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings. Starter Kyle Alcorn received no decision leaving the game after 5.1 innings with the lead, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks. Cole Nakachi faced three batters allowing three runs on two hits and a walk, John Kea pitched a third of an inning, facing five batters and allowing four runs – three earned – on three hits with a strikeout, while Thomas Warren faced two batters and allowed two runs on two walks, and Devan Elson threw two-thirds of an inning allowing an unearned run on two hits.
 
UHH's Dylan Spaine (4-6) picked up the complete game win in game two allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
 
HPU opened the first game with an RBI single from senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, to drive in Tokunaga who led off the game with a walk.
 
However UHH countered with runs in the first and second innings on an RBI double by Phillip Steering and a bases-loaded RBI single from Jonathan Segovia for a 2-1 lead.
 
The Sharks tied the game in the fifth after senior infielder Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon singled to lead off the inning and Kapeliela rapped a second RBI single of the game to score him.
 
But UHH answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kila Zuttermeister hit a bases-loaded two RBI single down the left field line for a 4-2 advantage.
 
The Sharks countered in the top of the sixth after freshman designated hitter Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai, doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by junior Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis. Mopas then scored on an RBI single from Tokunaga to tie the game a 5-all.
 
But the Vulcans retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on Segovia's second RBI single of the game to go up 6-5.
 
HPU tied the game in the seventh when Kapeliela doubled to left to lead off the inning, and scored after an error in right field following a single senior pinch hitter Codi Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS.
 
The Sharks grabbed the lead in the eighth when Bumann was hit by a pitch and Torres-Torioka smacked an RBI double to left to give HPU a 6-5 advantage.
 
HPU blew the top off the game in the ninth inning, scoring 10 runs. The Sharks loaded the bases, then Mopas was hit by a pitch for a run, Bumann dropped a suicide squeeze for another and Tokunaga added an RBI single for a third. Torres-Torioka followed with a two-RBI single to left to go up 11-5. A pinch hit RBI walk by junior Joshua Muneno of Honolulu/Maryknoll plated a sixth run, with senior pinch hitter Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle adding an RBI single and sophomore Matthew Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City a sacrifice fly gave the Sharks a 14-5 lead. Then back-to-back Vulcan errors scored two more runs for the 10 run inning and a 16-5 win.
 
The second game saw HPU jump out to a 2-0 lead.
 
The Sharks scratched out a run in the first on Tokunaga's leadoff bunt single that saw him reach second on a throwing error by starter Spain. Torres-Torioka followed with an RBI single for the 1-0 lead.
 
In the fourth, the Sharks got a leadoff double from Kapeliela with a Santana RBI single on the next pitch for the lead.
 
But HPU wouldn't score again.
 
The Vulcans picked up a run in the fifth when Zuttermeister reached on an error that drove in a run. Then Segovia tied the game in the sixth on a home run.
 
The game was decided in the eighth when Segovia was hit by a pitch and Steering was walked. The Vulcans pulled a double steal, with Segovia swiping third and scoring the game-winning run on an overthrow at third by senior catcher Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza.
 
The Sharks got a runner on in the ninth, but could not score.
 
HPU and UHH meet again on Sunday afternoon at Wong Stadium in a non-conference game starting at Noon. The teams will meet again next weekend for a three-game series at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.
