Sharks Sweep First Twinbill of the Season

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University had the bats come alive as the Sharks swept the season's first doubleheader beating Howard Payne 10-9 in the first game and 10-6 in the seven-inning nightcap at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (3-0) banged out 22 hits on the day in taking the two games from the Division III Yellowjackets (0-3).
 
Junior right fielder Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial led the offensive explosion, going 5-for-7 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was
2-for-6 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run for the day.
 
Senior right hander Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothill picked up the win in the first game after pitching 4.1 innings allowing one run on one hit and striking out two. Sophomore righty Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge got the win while starting the second game, going 4.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four Jackets with two walks.
 
The Sharks let a 10-6 lead in game one slip to 10-9 before sophomore left hander Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View came in to shut down the Jackets with a lineout and strikeout.
 
HPU wraps up the season opening series against the Texas HPU squad on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch at Hans L'Orange Park is scheduled for 11 a.m.
