IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University had a final inning meltdown in the second game of a doubleheader allowing Biola to sweep the day and the series 8-3 and 9-8 on Monday afternoon at Eagles Field.
The Sharks (16-10, 3-7) took an 8-7 lead in the of the seventh, only to see the Eagles (9-10, 4-0) collect two in the bottom of the frame via a non-scoring single, two hit batsmen and two walks for the sweep.
Senior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle led the offense on the day, going 4-for-8, including 3-for-4 in game two, with four RBIs and two runs scored, with junior designated hitter
Jared Bannister of San Ramon, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd going 3-for-7 including a two RBI home run. Junior
Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real was 2-for-4 with a home run in the second game.
The Sharks used eight pitchers in the two games, with first game starter, senior righthander
Christian Miller (1-2) of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap going three innings allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks with a strikeout. Freshman righty
Shane Adams of Honolulu/Mid-Pacific Institute, the game two starter, allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings for no decision. Junio righthanded reliever
Grant Dragmire (1-1) of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian picked up the game two loss allowing two earned runs on a hit, two hit batsmen and three walks.
CUI jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first four innings in the opener, collecting three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a two RBI double and an RBI single. The Eagles added the four with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
HPU scored a run in the fifth thanks to an error trying to complete a double play.
The Eagles plated two more in the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI single following three walks, and piled on two more in the seventh on a two RBI double after a bunt single and walk.
HPU collected a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on back-to-back RBI singles from Kapeliela and Bannister made it 8-3.
The Sharks and Eagles went back-and-forth in the seven-inning second game before the home-team Eagles pulled it out.
HPU opened with an RBI single by Kapeliela to score senior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, with CUI answering in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to knot the score at 1-all.
HPU retook the lead in the third on Selco's solo homer to left that led off the inning and an RBI double to right center by junior catcher
Gabriel Garcia of Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian for a 3-1 advantage.
The Eagles cut in by a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, but CUI opened the flood gates in the fourth. Following an RBI single, the Eagles got back-to-back RBI doubles from Collin Villegas and Shane Hersh to go up 5-3.
The Sharks answered in the top of the fifth as Kapeliela reached on a fielder's choice to set up Bannister for a two-run homer to left center for a tie game at 5-all.
CUI countered with two in the bottom of the fifth when on a pair of RBI singles to go up 7-5.
The Sharks cut the lead by one in the sixth on an RBI single from Kapeliela and Dragmire came in to hold CUI in the bottom of the inning.
In the seventh, HPU strung together two-out singles, the last and RBI by junior rightfielder
Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial that tied the game at 7-all. A walk loaded the bases for Kapeliela, who drew another walk that gave HPU an 8-7 lead.
But the Sharks couldn't hold in the bottom of the seventh. After a flyout, the next two CUI batters were hit by pitches. A shallow single loaded the bases for pinch hitter Calvin Schonebaum who drew a full-count walk to knot the game at 8-8. The Eagles sent up pinch hitter Tony Garcia III and he received a four-pitch walk to win the game.
The Sharks, who have now lost more than two in a row for the first time this season, have two days off before playing a three-day, four-game series at Azusa Pacific that starts Thursday with a single game at Cougar Field starting at 2 p.m. HST (5 p.m. PDT).
