Eagles Talon Sharks Twice 4-0, 6-2

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University took it on the chin twice on Monday as Biola claimed both ends of a PacWest doubleheader 4-0 and 6-2.

The Sharks (17-13, 11-5) suffered their second doubleheader sweep on the southern California road trip, while the Eagles (8-8, 3-3) evened their record in both overall and conference play.

Freshman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua and junior Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman lead what little offense the Sharks had in game one going 1-for-3 and 1-for-2 respectively in game one. In game two, it was the senior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who lead the Sharks going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington (11-4) pitched all six innings for her 11th complete game but took her fourth loss in game one. She allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. In the second game, junior righthander Emilee Leonard (4-4) of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul took the loss allowing five runs (three earned) in four innings. She gave up seven hits with a walk and picked up three strikeouts. Sophomore Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista came in for an inning allowing an earned run on two hits. Curry came back to close the game taking out all three batters she faced.

All four of Biola's game one runs came in the first inning after a leadoff walk and the next three tallying base hits for a pair of runs. Two additional runs were scored on two HPU fielding errors.

Six and half scoreless innings followed with effective pitching by Curry, who allowed just one hit after the first, but the damage had been don.

Biola's Paige Austin (3-4) went the distance for her first shutout of the season, striking out seven while allowing two hits with eight walks.

The Sharks struck first in game two with in the second inning. After a base hit to right field from Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado, Cantero-Kawelo took her first pitch and delivered past the fence for a two run homer over the right field fence. Unfortunately, that was the first and only time the Sharks saw the board today.

The Eagle's came back in the third with their own two run homer over right center field tying the game and took the lead on a walk, a double, and a sacrifice fly. They tacked on two more runs in the fourth on two hits and scored two unearned runs on a ground out and a Shark throwing error.

Biola's final run was another homer over the center field fence closing the game at 6-2 Eagles.

The Eagle's Paula Damas pitched 2.0 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jennifer Morinshi (2-1) got the win on game two pitching the final five innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

HPU finishes out their series at Biola tomorrow with another double header at Freedom Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. HST (4 p.m. PDT).
