SAN ANTONIO – No. 16 Hawai'i Pacific University got back on the winning track on Wednesday, defeating No. 10 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) 4-1 at the Annemarie Tennis Center.
The 16th ranked Sharks (7-1) handed the 10th ranked Bearcats (7-2) their second straight loss on the season and in San Antonio.
In a match played to the clinch because of threatening weather in the Hill Country of Texas, the Sharks took the doubles point as the No. 1 duo of Valentin Masse and
Maxime Gayte beat Raul Caballero and Adham Gaber 7-5 in the deciding set. HPU's No. 3 doubles of
Benjamin Loccisano and
Ondrej Ctverak beat David Szeri and Carlos Corser 6-4, after SBU's 23rd ranked Gyory and Ferenc Agoston defeated
Lukas Bauer and
Cheng-Chieh Wang 6-3 at No. 2.
It was the bottom of the order that came through for the Sharks in the abbreviated match, as Bauer beat Corser 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 for the 2-0 lead before SBU's Gyory Agoston came back on Loccisano an 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Sharks
Jonatan Lundahl won at No. 6 over Marcel Castello 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, and Gayte ended the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 4 over Szeri.
Two matches went unfinished, including the featured No. 1 position, where HPU's 31st ranked Masse held a 6-3, 3-6, 4-1 lead on 41st ranked Caballero. At No. 2, HPU's Ctverak held a lead on Gaber 6-3, 2-6, 4-3.
The Sharks continue against their strong competition in the Alamo city as they face 17th ranked Midwestern State on Thursday. The Sharks and Mustangs battle starts at 4:30 a.m. HST (9:30 a.m. CDT).
