Sharks Shut Out Dominican Twice On Tuesday

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University completed a four-game sweep of Dominican (Calif.) on Tuesday with a pair of shutouts in a PacWest Conference doubleheader at Howard A. Okita Field.

The Sharks (24-16, 17-7) dominated the Penguins (5-14, 4-14) 6-0 in game one and 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

Junior Emilee Leonard, of La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul notched her ninth complete game in the first contest, four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in her third shutout of the season.

Senior right hander Jordan Curry (14-6) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington hurled four innings in game two with five strikeouts as she allowed only two hits. Sophomore Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista pitched the final inning allowing a hit and with a strikeout.

Junior Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman went 5-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and an RBI while Leonard went 5-for-6 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.

In game one, the Sharks tacked on four runs in the third frame starting with a double down the right field line from senior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua. Dias picked up an RBI single through the right side scoring Tiana, and Leonard advanced her to second with another base hit. Freshman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua brought both of them home with a perfectly placed double to left center and advanced to third on the throw home. Sophomore catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado picked up her RBI with a hit through the middle making it 4-0 Sharks.

HPU added a pair of runs in the fourth to push the score to 6-0. Sophomore centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell was walked to start the inning and sacrificed to second by Cantero-Kawelo. Dias and freshman outfielder Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City both grabbed base hits, and Leonard scored Dias with a single up the middle for the sixth and final run of the game.

Dominican's Lauren Persi (3-5) threw 2.2 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits with two walks in taking the loss. Rosa Leguria pitched 3.1 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks.

In game two the Sharks scored in each of the first three innings on the way to the run rule victory.

In the first, Dias started things with a triple directly into the corner of right field and was brought home by Saunders with a single through the right side.

In the second, freshman Leipua Kaui of Kapa'a, Hawai'i/Kapa'a cracked a double over the center fielder and was sacrificed to third by sophomore Miki "Moots" Takara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Maryknoll. Curran brought her home with hard shot through the left side for a 2-0 lead.

The Sharks plated five runs in the third with only two hits but two Penguin errors. Leong reached on a fielder's choice and Curry hit her first home run of the season over the left field fence for a 4-0 advantage. Kaui walked, and Takara reached on a throwing error that allowed Kaui to run all three bases for an additional run. Curran follows and cranked the first pitch hard and high to deep right center field that caused an outfielder collision. She motored all the way around the basepath, almost overtook "Moots" rounding third to score on the Penguin four-base fielding error and a 7-0 lead.

The final run came in the fifth, and it was Curran who picked up an infield single, stole second and scored on a single to left field from Dungey that ended the game 8-0.

DUC's Alyssa Waltman (1-6) pitched 2.1 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Persi pitched the final 2.0 innings giving up four runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks.

The Sharks are idle the rest of this week and head to northern California at the end of next week for the annual Turlock Tournament of Champions March 29-31. The Sharks start the five-game battle against Concordia Portland on Friday, March 29, at the Pedretti Sports Complex. The first pitch is set for 6:00 a.m. HST (9 a.m. PDT).
