WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University returned to PacWest Conference play on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Fresno Pacific at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (15-5, 2-2) won the first game 5-2, but lost to the Sunbirds (4-7, 1-1) in game two 8-2.
Junior rightfielder
Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial led the offensive attack for the Sharks, going 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored, while freshman shortstop Dylan Kurahasi-Choy Foo of Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kailua went 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Sophomore righthander
Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge (4-0) chalked up his fourth win of the season in the first game, striking out six while allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings. Senior righthander
Ryan Sanchez of Atwater, Calif./Atwater, struck out one and allowed two hits in two innings. Junior righty
Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian recorded his first save of the season.
Senior lefthander
Joshua Muneno (2-1) of Honolulu/Maryknoll lost for the first time this season in the second game. Muneno pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. Freshman righthander
Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks in 1.2 innings. Junior lefty
Nick O'Connor of Las Vegas, Nev./Chaparral struck out two and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in 1.2 innings. Sophomore righty
Jake Hintze of Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge finished up, allowing a walk and a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The Sharks scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman
Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai. HPU added another in the fourth on a sac fly from junior second baseman
Jalen Bustos of Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd.
The Sunbirds tied the with a Ross Dodds solo homer in the fifth, followed by a pinch hit RBI single in the sixth from Dylan Lewis.
HPU responded with three in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an RBI triple from Kurahasi-Choy Foo, an RBI double from senior pinch hitter
Marc Sauceda of Temecula, Calif./Chaparral, and an RBI double from Coffey to take the 5-2 lead.
The Sharks held off Fresno Pacific to take the win. FPU's Esteban Lizaola (2-1) suffered the loss.
In game two, the Sharks ran into a hot pitcher in the Sunbirds Nic Boatman who raised his record to 3-0 with the win. Boatman struck out seven while allowing two runs on six hits in going the distance.
FPU picked up two runs in the first on a two-run shot by Dodds, his second of the day. The Sunbirds added runs in the fifth and sixth on RBI singles. FPU also scored twice in the seventh and ninth innings for insurance.
HPU collected a run in the sixth and eighth on a sacrifice flies by Coffey and Bustos.
The Sharks and Sunbirds have another doubleheader on Monday to complete the series. First pitch at Hans L'Orange Park is set for 4 p.m.
