Mopas Homers Twice, Sharks Win Third Straight 11-3

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University senior Jordan Mopas homered twice in lead HPU to an 11-3 PacWest Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (19-14, 6-11) won their third straight as the Urban Knights (11-10, 3-7) continued a four-game losing streak.

Mopas, the senior left fielder from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School hit a solo home run to left field in the second inning and a leadoff solo homer to left in the fifth with being hit by a pitch in the third, to record three home runs in three official at-bats including Saturday night's walk-off shot. He officially went 3-for-4 in the game with the two RBIs.

Senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in the contest, while junior second baseman Jalen Bustos of Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Senior righthander Tyler Van Stone (2-0) of Henderson, Nev./Foothill picked up his second win of the season with his first start since an arm injury in April 2018. Van Stone struck out four, while allowing one run on five hits and a walk in seven innings. Junior righthander Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings.

Donnie Gardiner followed with a walk in one inning, Galen Manhard struck out one in an inning and Thomas Delgadillo allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk in the final inning.

HPU started the scoring in the second inning with one out as Mopas crushed his first home run over the tree line in left. With a man on, Bustos hooked an RBI double into the right field corner for a 2-0 lead, and freshman shortstop Dylan Kurahasi-Choy Foo of Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kailua followed with a nearly identical shot into the right field corner for an RBI double for a 3-0 advantage.

The Sharks added a fourth run in the third inning on an RBI ground out by junior designated hitter Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real.

The Urban Knights scratched out a run in the top of the fourth with two out after a wild pitch on strike three allowed Zak May to reach and advance to second on a balk. Nick Daubin smacked an RBI single up the middle to cut HPU's lead to 4-1.

But the Sharks got that back in the bottom of the fourth after Bustos walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored when junior rightfielder Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial drilled an RBI single up the middle.

HPU added three more in the fifth, starting with Mopas second blast of the game. Sophomore third baseman Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai singles and was brought home on an RBI triple by Bustos, who scored on a wild pitch to give the Sharks an 8-1 advantage.
