Sharks Beat Central Washington, Lose to SF State at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University split games at the Turlock Tournament of Champions again on Saturday, beating Central Washington 6-0 and losing to San Francisco State 7-3 at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

The Sharks (26-18) picked up their second win of the season against the Wildcats (19-10), but fell to the Gators (20-13) for their second loss in the tournament.

Junior third baseman Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored in the first game, and 3-for-6 for the day. Freshman left fielder Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City was 2-for-4 in the second contest and 3-for-9 with an RBI on the day. Sophomore centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell was 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

Against Central Washington, it was once again the outstanding pitching of senior right hander Jordan Curry (16-6) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington who hurled a four-hit, complete game shutout. Curry struck out eight Wildcats with two walks in collecting her sixth shutout and 17th complete game.

In the San Francisco State contest, junior right hander Emilee Leonard (8-7) of La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul picked up the loss allowing all seven runs, six earned, on 15 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. Sophomore righty Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista struck out two in mopping up.

HPU opened the day against Central Washington with a Dias double and she scored on an RBI double from designated player Leonard for a 1-0 first inning lead.

The Sharks added a second in the third by the same duo, as Dias led off the inning with a double and Leonard scored her on a sacrifice fly. A third run came in the fourth on CWU fielding error that plated senior shortstop Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua for a 3-0 lead.

HPU put the game away in the sixth after loading the bases with two out, sophomore catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado smashed a bases-clearing triple for the 6-0 score.

In the second contest, San Francisco State broke open a tied game with a five-run sixth inning on the way to the 7-3 victory.

SF State posted runs in the third and fourth innings on HPU throwing errors for a 2-0 advantage.

The Sharks answered by stringing three doubles together, starting with freshman second baseman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who scored on Curran's RBI double. Curran crossed on Cantero-Kawelo's RBI double that tied the score at 2-2.

But the wheels came off for the Sharks in the bottom of the sixth. After the Gators collected outs on their first two batters, SFSU got a bunt single and single to left that set up pinch hitter Tiana Jacques who smashed a three-run homer to right field. The Gators added two more runs on an RBI single and a wild pitch to lead 7-2.

HPU added a final run in the seventh as Curran doubled and scored on an RBI single by Saunders, who was thrown out trying to stretch the single to a double that ended the game.

The Sharks have one more contest in the Turlock Tournament of Champions on Sunday when they meet Cal State Monterey Bay at 8:30 a.m. HST (11:30 a.m. PDT) at the Pedretti Sports Complex.
