KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University junior
Emilee Leonard tossed a no-hitter in leading HPU to a 1-0 win and a doubleheader sweep of Holy Names on Tuesday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Field.
The Sharks (14-8, 8-0) won the first game 2-0 over the Hawks (2-7, 1-3) on a two-hitter by senior
Jordan Curry.
The pair of remarkable pitching performances came in the first games played at Okita Field this season. HPU hasn't been able to get on the field due to wet conditions on the windward side of Oahu.
Leonard, the senior from La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul was the story of the second game, both in the batters box and in the pitching circle. Leonard, who outdueled HNU pitcher Chailey Stewart, collected the only game's only run in the second inning as she smashed an 0-1 offering from Stewart over the left field fence for her team leading third home run of the season.
After that, Leonard (3-2) weaved her magic, striking out five while dishing up two walks. Leonard was charged with an error on a ball mishandled that was hit back to the box that allowed a Hawk baserunner in the sixth.
Steward (0-3) was the hard luck loser, going all six innings with three strikeouts, allowing the home run and a single in the fifth with no walks.
Overshadowed by the no-hitter in the second game was the outstanding performance of Curry, the senior righty from Farmington, N.M./Farmington, who tossed a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts and three walks in winning her ninth game of the season (9-2).
The Sharks started things off in the first inning with senior
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua led off with a base hit bunt and advanced to third on an overthrow at first. Freshman
Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City rapped an RBI ground out to give HPU for the first score of the game.
HPU added another run in the second as sophomore
Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado put the first ball of the season in the back of the pine trees at Okita Field for the 2-0 lead.
Curry was masterful after that, allowing one walk and giving up a hit that was erased in a double-play in the fifth.
HNU's Synphony Hall (0-2) went all six innings allowing two runs, one earned on five hits with one walk. She grabbed a strikeout but took the loss on game one.
HPU is back on the field Wednesday to finish off the four game series against Holy Names. The action is set for noon at Howard A. Okita Field, weather permitting, before the Sharks head out to southern California for an eight-game road trip.
