No. 9 Saint Leo Edges No. 6 Sharks 4-3

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 6 Hawai'i Pacific University had tie breakers go against them that cost two points as No. 9 Saint Leo (Fla.) came from behind for a 4-3 victory at Sanlando Park on Friday.
 
The tie breakers in No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles dropped the sixth ranked Sharks (11-4) as the Lions (15-6) picked up their second straight win.
 
The first tiebreaker came as the Lions claimed the doubles point. The two teams split two of the sets, with the Sharks seventh ranked Valentin Masse and Maxime Gayte fell to 43rd ranked Aurel Ciocanu and Willem Van Den Akker 6-3 at No. 1, while Ondrej Ctverak and Benjamin Loccisano beat Ghali Mensour and Bruno Babic 6-3 at No. 3. But at No. 2, Lukas Bauer and Cheng-Chieh Wang battled Bruno Faletto and Leonardo Vega to 6-all before Faletto/Vega won the tiebreaker 7-5 for the 7-6 win and the point.
 
The Sharks grabbed the first singles point when 38th ranked Gayte beat Noel Kunz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 for the tie, but the Lions answered with Ciocanu beating 69th ranked Loccisano 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 for a 2-1 advantage.
 
Bauer stepped up for the Sharks, beating Van Den Akker 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, and Lucas Poock came through at No. 6 defeating Vega 6-2, 7-5 to give HPU a 3-2 lead.
 
The second tiebreaker came into effect at No. 1 singles, where 23rd ranked Masse dropped the first set to 21st ranked Faletto 7-6 (7-4). Faletto followed with a 6-2 win in the second set to even the match at 3-3.
 
In the tightest position in singles play at No. 2, Saint Leo's Mensour outlasted HPU's Ctverak 6-4, 7-5 to win the point and the match.
 
The Sharks have one more match in Florida before heading to the PacWest Championships in Surprise, Ariz., next week. HPU faces No. 37 Embry Riddle (Fla.) at Sanlando Park starting at 5 a.m. HST (11 a.m. EDT).
