SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University snapped a six-game losing streak with an 8-5 upset of No. 19 Point Loma in a PacWest Conference doubleheader split on Saturday at Carroll B. Land Stadium. Point Loma took the first game 9-4.
The Sharks (20-20, 7-15) picked up their first win on the mainland this season, while the Sea Lions (23-12, 11-6) had a two-game win streak halted.
The Sharks were paced at the plate by senior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle who went 5-for-9 in the twinbill with a two-run home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Junior second baseman
Trey Yukumoto of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua went 3-for-7 with two runs scored. Senior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School was 3-for-5 in the second game and 3-for-9 on the day with two RBIs. Freshman infielder Dylan Kurahasi-Choy Foo of Waimanalo, Hawai 'i/Kailua was 3-for-5 in the second game and 4-for-9 on the day with two RBIs.
Senior righthander
Tyler Van Stone (3-0) of Henderson, Nev./Foothill collected his third win of the season in the second game, striking out five and allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in 6.1 innings. Senior righthander
Christian Miller of Bremerton Wash./Central Kitsap picked up his first save of the season with five strikeouts and walk with no hits or runs in 2.2 innings.
In the first game, sophomore righty
Evan Spitzer (5-3) of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge took the loss in allowing six runs on nine hits with a walk in 2.1 innings. Senior
Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano hurled five innings in relief, striking out seven and allowing three runs on four hits with a walk. Sophomore lefthander
Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View finished up with a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
The Sharks got off on the wrong foot in the first game and couldn't dig out of a hole to the 19th ranked Sea Lions. PLNU got a leadoff single to start the bottom of the first, followed by an RBI double from Colby Kaneshiro and a two-run homer from Micah Pries to post a 3-0 lead after three batters.
In the second, the Sea Lions got two on with two out when Pries stepped up again to rock a three-run homer for a 6-0 lead.
The Sharks cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. HPU got its first runs in the fourth after a leadoff Mopas walk to set up Kapeliela's fourth home run of the season. Then in the fifth, Mopas collected an RBI off a sacrifice fly to score Yukumoto pull HPU within three at 6-3.
That score stayed until the bottom of the eighth, when the Sea Lions collected an RBI double and a two RBI double to push the lead to 9-3.
HPU added a run in the ninth when Yukumoto scored on a ground out by Mopas for the 9-4 final.
The Sea Lions Zack Noll (8-0) remained unbeaten after getting the win in striking out eight, and allowing three runs on five hits with two walks in six innings. Josh Richer pitched two-thirds of an inning with a walk and a hit, Steven Elliott struckout three with a walk and two hits in 1.1 innings and David Schlomovits finished with a strikeout, three walks and a run in an inning.
The Sharks opened the second game with a pair of first inning runs, with a Kapeliela RBI single and after an error and wild pitch, Kapeliela scored on a passed ball to go up 2-0.
The Sea Lions tied the game with an RBI double from Kaneshiro in the first and a sacrifice fly Travis Takata in the second.
HPU regained the lead in the fourth after a double from junior
Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real followed by an RBI single to center from Kurahasi-Choy Foo to go up 3-2.
In the fifth, HPU took a commanding lead with three runs. After a pair of singles, Kapeliela added an RBI single to right for one run, with Selco following with an RBI single for another run. Junior third baseman
Jalen Bustos of Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd lofted a sacrifice fly to put HPU up 6-2.
Point Loma cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Pries RBI single where he ended the inning thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double.
The Sea Lions narrowed the gap to 6-5 in the seventh with a Takata RBI double for one run and an RBI hit by pitch.
But the Sharks sealed the contest in the ninth with from Mopas on a PLNU throwing error, then an RBI single from Kurahasi-Choy Foo for the 8-5 advantage.
Miller worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win for the Sharks.
Point Loma's Jerry Quemada (4-1) picked up his first loss of the season, going 4.2 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on 11 hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Nicholas Cornelius struckout one on two hits in 1.1 innings, followed by Connor Barrett working an inning with a walk, Elliott allowed two unearned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.1 innings. John Balliet finished the final two-thirds of an inning with a hit.
The Sharks and the 19th ranked Sea Lions have a day off on Sunday before facing each other in a doubleheader on Monday at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
