No. 11 Sharks Roll Cal State LA 4-0 in PacWest Quarterfinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 11 and second-seeded Hawai'i Pacific University dropped only one set in an unfinished match as HPU blanked seventh-seeded Cal State LA 4-0 in quarterfinal play at the 2019 PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
 
The Sharks (11-5) ended the match with the Golden Eagles (7-10) in just over two hours in the win over the Silverswords (3-11) and advance to the semifinals.
 
HPU won the doubles point with relative ease, as Mihoki Miyahara and Sara Ikioka won at No. 2 against Luciana Di Laura and Mariko Sagara 6-1, before the Sharks top duo in 17th ranked Elodie Busson and Elisa Elhadj ripped Amanda Schneider and Isabella Lopez 6-3. The No. 3 teams of Debora Echeverria and Heloise Le Normand were tied with Berta Acero Garcia and Chelsey Ruiz 4-4 when the point was won.
 
The Sharks ended the match with the top positions chalking up victories. No. 22 Busson wasted little time in dispatching Schneider 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Miyahara came in next at No. 3 ripping Lopez 6-3, 6-0, with Elhadj ending the match at No. 2 by taking out Di Laura 6-4, 6-2.
 
In the matches that were unfinished after the Shark clinch, Echeverria lost the first set at No. 4 to Acero Garcia 3-6, and was tied 2-2 in the second. Ikioka won a tiebreaker at No. 5 7-6 (8-6) and led 2-1, and Le Normand won a set at No. 6 against Sagara 6-4 and was down 2-3 in the second.
 
The Sharks advance to the semifinals to meet third seeded and 20th ranked Azusa Pacific on Friday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. MST).
