HPU Splits Twinbill at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University picked up a win and a loss on Friday in splitting a PacWest Conference doubleheader with Biola at Eagles Diamond. HPU lost the first game 5-3, but took the second 4-2.
 
The Sharks (21-24, 8-19) lost the first game 5-3 to the Eagles (23-16, 14-13), but took the second contest 4-2.
 
Senior leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School went 3-for-7 on the day, including 3-for-5 in the first game with a triple and two RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter/third baseman Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai was 1-for-7 on the day, but 1-for-4 in the second game, with an RBI and a run scored in each contest. Senior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City was 3-for-7 in the leadoff spot with a double and a run scored.
 
Senior righthander Ryan Sanchez (1-0) of Atwater, Calif./Atwater chalked up his first win of the season and second of his HPU career, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings in the second game. Senior righty Christian Miller of Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap, allowed a walk, a hit and struckout one in two innings of relief. Junior righthander Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian collected his second save this season allowing a hit in one-third of an inning.
 
Senior righthander Tyler Van Stone (3-1) of Henderson, Nev./Foothill, suffered his first loss of the season in game one. He struck out four in allowing four runs on six hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. Sophomore lefthander Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View allowed a run on two hits in three innings, while junior righty Travis Paynter of Port Angeles, Wash./Port Angeles finished with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
 
Game one found the Sharks grabbing a first inning 2-0 lead as HPU got a single and a hit-batsman to set up Mopas' two RBI triple down the right field line.
 
The Eagles got the runs back in the third, with a Robert Anthony Cruz RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Jackson Collins to knot the game a 2-all.
 
Biola took the lead in the fifth when Joey Magro sent a 0-1 pitch to left center for a two-run home run for the 4-2 advantage.
 
The Sharks loaded the bases in the sixth for Layosa, who plated one with a sacrifice fly, but HPU couldn't and another score.
 
The Eagles got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after a one out triple when Collins followed with an RBI single for the 5-3 score.
 
Dallas Burk (1-1) tallied five strikeouts with five walks in six innings, allowing three runs on six hits in picking up the win. Honus Kindreich had a strikeout and two hits in two innings, and Josh Ludeman grabbed his fifth save with a perfect ninth inning of work.
 
The Sharks broke open a scoreless second game with three runs in the third. After Tokunaga reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a balk, Layosa ripped an RBI single down the left field line for the first run. HPU loaded the bases on a hit-batsman and a walk, before senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle drew an RBI walk and junior designated hitter Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to put HPU up 3-0.
 
The Eagles posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Magro RBI single and a Cruz sacrifice fly to pull within one at 3-2.
 
HPU answered in the sixth. Junior pinch hitter Gabe Garcia of Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian singled and was driven in by freshman catcher Kyle Layugan of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Mid-Pacific Institute for the 4-2 lead.
 
BU threatened in the bottom of the seventh of the seven-inning contest, but Dragmire got a final ground out to give HPU its second win on the mainland this season.
 
Kenny Carrillo (5-3) took the loss allowing three runs on six hits in four innings. Joey Leavitt finished with two strikeouts in allowing a run on two hits in three innings.
 
The Sharks and Eagles close the series on Saturday with a single nine-inning contest. HPU's final road game of the season starts at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
