Sharks Swept to End Season

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University brought down the curtain on the 2019 baseball season by being swept by Holy Names 7-0 and 6-4 in PacWest Conference play on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (22-27, 9-22) ended their season while the Hawks (16-27, 10-17) snapped a five-game losing streak with the two wins.

The Sharks were two-hit in the first game by Holy Names senior Garrett O'Callaghan, who got the complete-game shutout in striking out 10, with three walks. He gave up a hit in the first and eighth innings.

Junior second baseman Trey Yukumoto of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua went 2-for-6 in the two contests, with a double in game two. Senior leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School was hitless in the first game, but was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter/third baseman Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai also was 2-for-3 in the second game with an RBI and a stolen base.

Senior righthander Tyler Van Stone (3-2) of Henderson, Nev./Foothill suffered the first game loss after a horrendous first inning. Van Stone allowed all seven runs, four earned, in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Senior lefthander Joshua Muneno of Honolulu/Maryknoll finished the game in relief with a strikeout and walk to go with two hits in 2.2 innings.

Senior righthander Ryan Sanchez (1-1) of Atwater, Calif./Atwater took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks in five innings. Sanchez struck out four Hawks. Senior righthander Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap struck out one in working a perfect inning, while freshman righty Shane Adams of Honolulu/Mid-Pacific Institute was sheel for three runs, all earned, on three hits and a walk in just two-thirds of an inning. Junior righthander Travis Paynter of Port Angeles, Wash./Port Angeles worked one and a third innings with four strike outs and a hit, while junior Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian allowed one walk and struck out one in the final inning.

In the first contest, the Hawks scored four runs before the Sharks knew what hit them. After loading the bases with the first three batters, Ryan Frakes crushed a two RBI double to left center. Another run came home on a wild pitch and the fourth crossed the plate on a double play for the 4-0 lead.

Senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle got the Sharks first hit in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't score. HPU wouldn't get another hit until the eighth inning on a Yukumoto single.

The Hawks added two more runs in the sixth on a two RBI single from Brad Bussard and finished the scoring in the seventh on a Frakes RBI single, his third RBI of the game.

The second game had HNU turn a Shark fielding error into a run on a Frakes RBI single in the first,

HPU followed in the bottom of the first when junior designated hitter Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real was hit by a pitch with two out and was doubled home by Mopas. Mopas scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Layosa for a 2-1 lead.

But the Hawks countered in the third when then rightfielder Joshua Nelson rapped a single down the rightfield line for two RBIs to take a 3-2 lead.

HPU threatened in the bottom of the third, but left the bases loaded and stranded two more runners in the fifth.

HNU scored three times in the seventh, with Frakes again picking up an RBI single, and Nelso following with a 2 RBI double to left center.

HPU came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double by senior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, the Sharks got back-to-back walks to load the bases before reliever Jeff Hill threw a wild pitch to score Tokunaga. Mopas followed with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Kapeliela for the 6-4 difference. But once again the Sharks stranded two runners to end the inning.

HPU threatened again in the eight, but left two on. In all, the Sharks stranded 12 runners for the game.

The Hawks Christopher Gunn (4-1) got the win allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Hill walked two in a third of an inning and Nelson came from rightfield to the mound in the seventh and worked 2.2 innings for his fifth save of the season, striking out six with a walk and two hits.

The losses closed the book on the inaugural season for HPU head coach Dallas Correa and the Sharks as they bid "Aloha" to eight seniors from the squad.
