Sharks Swept At Hawai'i Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University was swept in a PacWest Conference doubleheader by island rival Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday afternoon 8-0 in five innings and 5-2 at the UH Hilo Softball Field.
 
The Sharks (27-20, 18-10) had a lead in the second contest before the Vulcans (25-14, 19-8) made a comeback for the twinbill sweep.
 
In the first game, junior right hander Emilee Leonard (8-8) of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul suffered the loss allowing five earned runs in three innings. She gave up five hits with six walks and a strikeout. Senior Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic threw 1.0 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks.
 
In game two, Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington (17-7) hurled her 19th complete game of the year with six strikeouts, but had a 25-inning streak without allowing a run snapped as she gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits in six innings.
 
In the opener, UH Hilo scored two runs in the first inning on two walks, a base hit, and another double bringing in two. They added another run in the third with the runner scoring on a wild pitch.
 
After another run in the third, the Vulcans tacked on three runs in the fourth on three walks, a double, and a sacrifice fly making it 7-0.
 
The final game ending run in the fifth came from two consecutive base hits, a stolen base, and a single to right center.
 
The Vulcans Isabelle Mejia (9-2) threw the five inning shutout allowing five hits with a walk and one strikeout.

In the second contest, the Sharks broke open a scoreless game in the fourth on the third home run of the season from freshman Leipua Kaui of Kapa'a, Hawai'i/Kapa'a who smashed a two-run shot to score freshman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who had singled to reach.
 
The Vulcans came right back with three consecutive hits to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth before Skylar Thomas ripped a two RBI single to tie the game. UHH scored again on an HPU throwing error and the fourth run of the inning scored on a ground out.
 
The final run of game two came in the sixth on an RBI single from Brinell Kaleikini for the final score of 5-2 in favor of Hilo.
 
UHH's Valerie Alvarado picked up the complete game, going all seven innings with two earned runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the win.

HPU comes back home for a four game series against Academy of Art on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Howard Okita Field.
