IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University won its third straight before falling in the fourth game of the season at the Concorida Kickoff Classic at Great Park.
The Sharks (3-1) won their first game 6-3 over Cal State East Bay (0-3) for their third straight win, but lost in the second contest of the day 12-3 to Cal State San Marcos (2-2).
Junior centerfielder
Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell led the Sharks offensive attack by going 4-for-5 on the day with four runs scored, two triples, a double, two RBIs and two walks. Senior third baseman
Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, two RBIs and two walks. Sophomore shortstop
Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll went 3-for-6 with a run scored.
The Sharks used a four-run third inning to come back from a 2-0 deficit against CSU East Bay and added two more in the fifth for insurance in the 6-3 win.
After allowing two runs in the top of the third, the Sharks answered with a two-run triple from Curran and RBI singles from Diaz and senior designated player Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab for a 4-2 advantage.
The Sharks allowed another run in the fourth before answering in the fifth after another Curran triple and an RBI double from sophomore Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City. Saunders would score thanks to a two-base error on the play that made the score 6-3.
True freshman righthander
Ashlee Laver (1-0) of Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge went the distance in recording her first collegiate win, allowing three runs on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk in seven innings. CSUEB's Abby Greer (0-2) got a complete game loss, with six runs, three earned on seven hits with a walk in six innings.
Cal State San Marcos rocked the Sharks with four runs in the first and two more in the top of the third on the way to the 12-3 win.
Junior righthander
Malia Torres (2-1) of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista gave up eight runs, five earned, on eight hits with a strikeout and two walks in 4.1 innings. Junior lefthander
Megan Wilson of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch, allowed four runs on five hits with a walk in 2.2 innings of relief.
Zoe Ballen (2-0) got the win for the Cougars, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings with two strikeouts and four walkes.. Carly Slack hurled a scoreless, hitless inning of relief.
After allowing the first six runs, HPU plated two runs in the third on a Dias RBI triple and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher
Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado. The Sharks added another in the seventh after a Curran double and advancement when Saunders got the RBI on a sacrifice fly.
HPU closes out the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. HST (10 a.m. PST) against Chico State at Great Park.
