No. 8 Sharks Sweep Twice On Big Island Sunday

WAIMEA, Hawai'i – No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University picked up two more wins on Sunday, sweeping Hawai'i Hilo 4-0 and Stanislaus State 7-0 at the Fairmont Orchid Tennis Center.
 
The Sharks (4-2) swept through the Vulcans (0-3) before taking out the Warriors (2-2) in the sweep that played all seven points as the last match of the trip for both squads.
 
The Sharks won every position played and held the lead in those that went unfinished in the morning contest with UH Hilo.
 
HPU won the doubles point by taking No. 1 with Marleen Tilgner/Mikohi Miyahara beating Anouk van Hoek/Carmelle Joyner 6-2, and No. 3 as Sarah Ikioka/Nicole Ballach defeated Sandra Dafincescu/Garbriela Aguilar Law 6-3. The No. 2 team of Elodie Busson/Heloise Le Normand was up on Marina Colvee/Irena Lee 5-3 when play was halted after HPU won the point.
 
HPU collected the three singles points in matches where the Sharks lost only two sets. Miyahara ripped van Hoek 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, while Busson won at No. 1 over Colvee 6-0, 6-1, and Ikioka did the same at No. 5 over Le 6-0, 6-1.
 
The unfinished singles had Tilgner ahead at No. 2 against Dafincescu 6-2, 5-3, Le Normand up at No. 4 against Joyner 7-6 (7-5), 2-0, and Ballach ahead at No. 6 versus Aguilar Law 6-0, 4-4.
 
In the afternoon, the Sharks did not lose a set in the victory against Stan State.
 
HPU moved a doubles pair out that allowed Bianca Schulof/Monica Greene to defeat Kate Bolton/Karrigan Cook 6-4 at No. 3. Ikioka/Ballach moved up to No. 2 to down Megan Hagerty/Sylvana Talamantes 6-3, and Tilgner/Miyahara won at No. 1 over Ashley Isaac/Kayla Nguyen 6-4.
 
The Sharks took all six singles positions in straight sets, with Busson beating Isaac 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Tilgner taking down Hagerty 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, and Miyahara shutting out Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Ikioka defeated Talamantes 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, while Ballach beat Bolton 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Jayme Waites moved into the No. 6 position to defeat Cook 6-2, 6-4 for the clean page sweep.
 
HPU returns to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when the Sharks visit No. 15 Midwestern State (Texas) in Wichita Falls leading up to the ITA Division II Indoor Championship in Oklahoma City later that week.
