Sharks Split With No. 10 Concordia Irvine

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific got a bases-loaded triple from Sierra Dias to plate three runs and beat No. 10 Concordia Irvine 7-4 in the night cap of a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Friday at Howard Okita Field. Concordia won the first game 3-0.

The Sharks (8-7, 3-3) ended the 9-game winning streak of the Eagles (11-2, 5-1) delivering them their first lost in conference play.

Senior third baseman Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman led the Sharks on the day, going 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a 2-for-3 second game.  Right fielder Ashley Iseri also put up two runs on two hits with one RBI in the second game.

First game pitcher Malia Torres (4-4) of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista collected a complete game in the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Freshman Ashlee Laver (3-3) of Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge picked up the complete game win against the 10th ranked Eagles, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks.

Game one witnessed CUI posting single tallies in the first, third and sixth innings.

The Eagles scored first when Michelle Lieng hit into a fielder choice scoring Amanda Gjertsen who was waiting on third.

Torres kept it that way until the third inning when the Eagles took advantage of two Shark errors to score their second run of the day.

The Eagles collected their final run after an HPU error in the sixth when pinch hitter Alyssa Turner's RBI single drove in a second unearned run of the contest.

Callie Nunes (5-0) picked up the win, going all seven innings allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and only two walks.

In game two, HPU matched No. 10 Concordia Irvine for four innings before breaking away in the fifth, loading the bases on walks before grabbing the lead when senior designated player Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab lofted a sacrifice fly for the Sharks first lead of the series.

CUI tied the game in the sixth thanks to an error that led to an unearned run on an RBI single Megan Massa to make it 4-all.

HPU answered with a 3-run triple in the bottom of the inning hit by Dias after Nunes came back in relief and intentionally walked junior Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell to load the bases.

CUI were three up-three down in the top of the seventh, suffering their second loss of the season and first loss in PacWest Conference play.

HPU returns to action on Monday against Azusa Pacific in PacWest action. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Howard Okita Field.
