No. 8 Sharks Stun No. 4 UINDY at ITA Indoors

EDMOND, Okla. – No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University stunned No. 4 Indianapolis 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the ITA Division II National Indoor Team Championship at the Oak Tree Country Club Tennis Center.
 
The Sharks (6-2) lost the doubles point to the Greyhounds (7-1) but claimed four of the singles points to take the match and hand the Hounds their first loss of the year.
 
UINDY won at No. 3 as Ana Valiaeva/ Maria Solnyshkina beat Sarah Ikioka and Nicole Ballach 6-2, while Nikol Alexeeva/Anna Novikova won at No. 1 against Mihoki Miyahara and Marleen Tilgner 6-4. HPU also trailed at No. 3 as Alina Kislitskaya/Maja Pindelska held a 5-4 lead on Elodie Busson and Heloise Le Normand when the point was decided.
 
The Greyhounds nearly swept the Sharks, as HPU fell behind 3-0 with Kislitskay ripped Miyahara 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and Novikova got by Tilgner 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.
 
Facing a match sweep with a loss, Le Normand battled through a tiebreaker and a long second set against Solnyshkina at the No. 4 to earn HPU its first point of the match 7-6, 7-5.
 
With a new hope, HPU got a win from Nicole Ballach at No. 6 against Valiaeva 6-2, 7-5. Sarah Ikioka tied the match at 3-3 with a three-set win at No. 5 over Pindelska 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
 
The match hinged on the grinding duel at No. 1. The Greyhounds Alexeeva took the first set 4-6, but the Sharks Busson claimed the second 7-5. With all the other positions complete, Busson forced a tiebreaker in the final set. Both exhausted, Busson managed to find a bit more left in her tank and took the match, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
 
The Sharks advance to the semifinals on Saturday against No. 3 Columbus State (Ga.) at 1:30 p.m. HST (5:30 p.m. CST.) at Oak Tree.
