No. 6 UC San Diego Sweeps Sharks in Twinbill

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University suffered a doubleheader sweep as No. 6 UC San Diego took an 11-0 win in five innings and followed it with a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap.

The Sharks (3-4) suffered their second shutout of the season in the first game against the Tritons (7-0) who maintained their perfect season with the win in game two.

HPU collected 11 hits on the day, led by senior third baseman Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman who went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore second baseman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua was 3-for-5 on the day, going 3-for-3 in the second game.

The Sharks scored their only run of the day in the third inning of the second game, when junior centerfielder Cieanna Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell got a one-out triple to left center and scored on Dias' RBI double.

The Tritons got all of their first game runs in the opening two innings, scoring five runs in the first and six more in the second. UCSD held defensively to have the game called after five by the run-rule.

Junior righthander Malia Torres (2-2) of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista started game one and pitched into the second inning, allowing seven runs on seven hits with a walk while recording just three outs. Junior lefthander Megan Wilson of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch hurled three innings allowing four runs, all unearned, on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Robyn Wampler (3-0) picked up the win, allowing three hits in four innings with two strikeouts. Kaia Simpson threw one inning of relief allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

The Tritons started strong again in the second game, chalking up three runs in the first and another in the second to take a 4-0 lead.

The Sharks scored on the Dias RBI double in the top of the third, only to have the Tritons follow with two more in the bottom of the inning to grab a 6-1 advantage. HPU got a runner to third in the fourth and stranded them. The Sharks never got a runner past second the remainder of the contest.

UCSD added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-1 win.

Freshman righthander Ashlee Laver (1-2) of Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge went the distance in suffering the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits with a walk, while striking out three.

Alanna Phillips (4-0) pitched six innings allowing one run on seven hits with a strikeout. Dominique Acosta threw one perfect inning with two strikeouts.

The Sharks return home and will host their home opener next Monday, Feb. 17, by hosting the University of British Columbia in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch at HPU's Howard Okita Field is set for Noon.
