Cougars Sweep Sharks To Close Series

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University was swept in Saturday's doubleheader as Azusa Pacific won 16-3 and 13-3 in PacWest Conference action at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (5-8, 1-5) closed their four-game conference series with the PacWest preseason favorite Cougars (8-8, 3-3) with the twinbill.
 
In game one, the Sharks were the first to strike with a single run in the opening frame. Junior Diego Harris of Los Angeles, Calif./Crespi chopped a ball just high enough to the mound to run it out for a base hit, and advanced to third on a laser beam up the middle by Joe Gallagher of Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo. Harris scored on a ground out to give HPU an early advantage.
 
APU answered back with seven unearned runs in the second on five hits including a three RBI double to left center and an HPU error.
 
The Sharks were able to add another run in the fifth on a walk followed by a base knock from Harris and a Cougar fielding error to load the bases. A ground out scored the run making it 7-2.
 
In the seventh, HPU managed another run on another base hit from Harris followed by a chopper passed third base by senior Jared Bannister of San Roman, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd. Both runners advanced and Harris scored on another hard hit chop by junior Braxton Wherle of Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman making it 7-3.
 
APU was able to bring their lead back to six with an additional two runs in the eighth on two doubles to left center and a base hit.
 
The ninth was all APU as they added seven more runs on six hits and an HPU error to end it at 16-3.
 
Sophomore Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani threw for five innings allowing seven unearned runs on five hits with three walks. He also picked up two strikeouts, but took the loss on game one moving to 0-1 on the season. Senior Nick O'Connor of Las Vegas, Nev./Chapparal threw one and one third innings allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Freshman righty Edward Lee of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kalani pitched two thirds of an inning allowing four runs with a strikeout. Senior Conlan Myers faced four batters allowing three runs on three hits, and freshman Jason Shiigi finished out the final inning allowing a hit while picking up a strikeout.
 
APU's Nick Estrella threw for five innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with three walks. He tallied seven strikeouts for his second win of the season. David Wyle threw two innings allowing an earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. Korey Shepard threw one inning with a strikeout, and Shane Cronin finished the game putting down three.
 
Game two was run by the Cougars. They exploded out of the gates tallying eight runs in the first and added three more in the third.
 
The Sharks hit the board in the third starting with a base hit from senior Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial, and Gallagher was walked. Bannister brought in two with a base hit to center, and senior Matt Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City followed suit to bring in run three making it 11-3.
 
HPU's junior righty Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge threw two thirds of an inning allowing eight runs, five earned, on four hits with four walks. He got the loss moving him to 0-2 on the season. Junior Zack McHone of Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty Hills pitched for the remainder of the game allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits with seven strikeouts.
 
The Cougar's Isaac Mendez threw two and two thirds innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Spiro Valasakos found an inning and a third allowing two hits with a strikeout. Jon Keane threw one inning allowing a hit with two strikeouts, and John Szcresny threw one inning allowing two hits. Brendan Dixon finalized the game with a strikeout and a walk.
 
The Sharks are back at Hans L'Orange on Wednesday for a double header match up against Biola University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
